Collins close to deal with Northwestern

this is going to turn out to be one of the best coaching hires of the year. I wish he would have been on Iowa's list back when Fran was hired.. not saying i dont like Fran. just saying wish he would have been considered. The guy can and probably will land some of Chicago's top talent and make NU a tournament team

TheScore was reporting this yesterday that a deal could even be announced before Duke plays on Friday. I think Collins is a very good hire for Northwestern and this just makes the Big Ten all the more competitive.

I don't know is NW going to

1. lighten up the admission standards
2. upgrade facilities

This seems to be a big problem at NW.

I will wait to see if Collins can do anything with NW.

Why? Most of Coach K's assistants have failed on their own at much stronger basketball programs without the handicaps that come with the NW job.

NW has to have an angle to be competitive in Big Ten hoops IMO. Carmody ran a gimmicky system on both ends of the floor. He could make the sum of the parts better than the individual pieces. Collins may be a great coach but I think any coach will struggle at NW. I predict NW will be reminiscing about the good old days of Carmody sooner rather than later.

That is about as big of a name Northwestern could ever hope to get. Collins is from the suburbs of Chicago so he should be able to recruit, he did help Duke land Jon Scheyer & Sean Dockery from Chicago, and he comes from a fine coaching pedigree. He has served his time as an assistant and associate head coach, it is time to see what he has got.

I would much rather hire a coach who has proven he can run a program at a lower and can pull in recruits on his own, than one who has spent all his time in Coach K's shadow. Pulling a big time recruit out of Chicago is much easier when you have the Duke prestige behind you. I think he fails big time here.

Why isn't he?

No experience running a program on his own, the track record of Duke assistants having success on their own is not a strong one. He's never recruited to a school that isn't the bluest of blue bloods in college basketball. The Duke program has never missed a beat when any of Coach K's other assistants took head jobs.

Exactly. I think he will do a better job at recruiting than previous coaches. Basketball fans know him, his family, and his Duke resume.

Like Duke or not, when a Duke recruiter comes to a school, the school opens its doors. He likely has a lot of relationships and a solid network that he can draw upon.

Got it. You don't like Duke.

Excellent hire.

But we are talking about Northwestern here, of the coaches that would have considered Northwestern hiring Collins was the best move they could have made. In fact I am a little surprise they landed him and Collins did not play the field a little before agreeing to take the job. You might be right (and I hope you are) and Collins may turn out to be a bad coach, I won't lose any sleep over it. :D

I have no problem with Duke, I've just seen Amaker get fired from Michigan, Snyder bomb out at Mizzou, Capel get fired from OU, Dawkins struggle at Stanford. Mike Brey is the only one who has had sustained success. I'm actually glad NW hired him, just don't think he'll be sucessful.

Successful at what level?

Indiana level?

Kentucky level?

Duke level?

No, no, and no.

Northwestern level? Yes, and beyond.

Amaker wanted the Northwestern job before Carmody got it, I think a lot of Duke guys have thought they could turn NW into the Duke of the B10. But it's really ******* hard to do, the coaching talent in this league is outstanding right now, any time an assistant becomes a head coach there's going to be some growing pains, but there's just no room for error in this conference and a first time head coach would make me very nervous.
