No, Arkansas doesn't pay Bret Bielema $5.1 million a year (but he does make a lot) - SBNation.com

Some intersting numbers. From article:

Iowa's Kirk Ferentz makes 10 times the amount of Northern Illinois's Rod Carey. Carey's squad beat Ferentz and the Hawkeyes this year.

No. 3 Oregon's head coach, Mark Helfrich, is 56th on the list, making $1.8 million per year. That puts him behind Purdue's Darrell Hazell, South Florida's Willie Taggart, Maryland's Randy Edsall and Colorado's Mike MacIntyre.

Good, good. I'm glad someone finally found the courage to talk about KF's salary here. OP is brave beyond all logic.

Shame on me for even opening this thread but since I did I am compelled to comment. How much you pay a coach has nothing to do with wins on a football field. You cannot simply throw $10 million, or whatever the top salary is, and instantly get a team that will win the national championship. The salary is what it is and there is no amount of whining we can do that will change it. We all know what the contract is and what the buyout is, if you want to change it drop Barta a note and offer to buyout his contract.

This wasn't a complaint or "whining" as you put it. I simply posted a link that had some interesting numbers and added a segment that was about Iowa so it pertained to this board. The most interesting number I thought was about Oregon, which was posted below. Probably should have gone with the gen college football board so people didn't think this was a shot a his contract. There was also this :

Michigan's Brady Hoke makes about $1 million more than all the other coaches in the state combined -- including Michigan State's Mark Dantonio, who has beaten Hoke two out of three times.

If anything the article shows that the bolded is correct.

Oh. My. God.

Enough of these freaking "salary" threads already. Do you people pay ONE SINGLE PENNY of Kirk Ferentz' contract? NO. You do not. And don't give me the BS taxes argument. The UI athletic fund can easily handle his salary without your taxes. Who cares how much he makes? Who cares how much any coach makes? Sports is big business these days. Millions of dollars is what it costs to hire a coach, retain a coach, extend a coach. Get over it.

A contract doesn't guarantee your program X amount of wins. It doesn't guarantee your program X amount of highly touted recruits. Just because coach A gets paid more than coach B, doesn't mean coach A will or should win every time.

In Iowa's case, Ferentz' contract guaranteed that he stayed in Iowa. It rewarded him for the many successes he's had at this university over more than a decade's time, it rewarded him for the respectable, clean program that he's run (which all of you hard-working, Midwest types should have respect for, by the way), it rewarded him for the number of players he's groomed for the NFL and the number of young men he's helped earn a degree, it rewarded him for all he's done for this state.

Say what you will, but Kirk Ferentz put and kept Iowa on the map through the 2000s better than most others could have. And, these upgraded facilities at the University of Iowa wouldn't be there without him.

At some point, you'll all get your wish and Ferentz will be gone. Just remember, be careful what you wish for because Iowa could have and still can do one heck of a lot worse.

By sticking with the black and gold, and in our state as long as he has, Kirk Ferentz showed Iowa and the fans a lot of respect. Let's return the favor and not drag his name through the mud as he hits the tail end of his career. The university, the football program and the fans owe him a lot.

Oh my god. Every bit of your rebuttal is absolute hogwash mixed in with cotton candy and gum drops. You seriously don't think that way do you? I'm going into work tomorrow and telll all my employees they get 100 percent raises then tell them they don't have to worry about future performance as long as they stick with the company the next 10 yrs! Give me a freaking break!

You're most likely right. Kirk Ferentz, the head football coach at the University of Iowa, probably doesn't worry about how his team performs. YOU probably care more than he does. He's got his money, and now he's just a fat cat who doesn't care one bit about the welfare of the program that he took to heights its never been. YOU, Mr. Fanboy, are probably more invested in the Hawkeyes than he is.

Tell you what, why don't the Hawkeyes just can Ferentz, hire a new coach and pay him whatever you deem fit, then every time the Iowa coach doesn't win 8 games (or is it 9? I forget the expectations that the bandwagoners have placed on the program) we fire him, too, then rinse and repeat the cycle until we've gone through the rolodex.

This compelling argument will go nowhere with posters who continually echo the "...fire everyone, KF, GB, and of course, Sally Mason!" However, I am glad you posted this well thought out and well written piece. Thank you.

So glad we can talk about KFs salary some more. Does anyone know what he gets paid?

I don't know what he makes as it has never been disclosed to the public. The reason they won't reveal it to the public is because it will cause mass riots across the world.

Discussing KF's salary is like saying Freddie Kruger's name.

What a martyr he is.. Hanging around this godforsaken state for a paltry 3.7 million a year. How can we ever repay him?
He's a damn football coach, not a God. This state and Iowa fans have done just as much for him and his family. Iowa fans owe him no more than he owes them.

DDStretch - OU did that and they ended up with Stoops...two years later they were National Champs. You have to know when to cut bait and move on....the time is now for KF to move on!
