Coaching, recruiting and public relations

I was thinking about those TERRIBLE Big Ten ads where Lick looked like he was getting a colonoscopy, they couldnt have helped with recruiting.
I dont think the recruiting ability or X-O's matter much if the guy resents the media or makes milk toast look viibrant. The new guy needs to know the attention that comes with being a coach in a state without pro-teams and not to be bothered by the media

I wonder how many takes it took with the director repeatedly saying, "Coach, give me some excitement!" before they gave up and used that one. ;)

The new coach needs to promote the program including being a frequent guest on sports talk radio stations throughout the state. For example, the new coach should be on Miller & Deace at least once a week during the season.

Here in Columbus, Thad Matta and Tom Izzo are all over the radio. While they don't take listener's phone calls, they spend considerable time with the host or hosts discussing all aspects of college basketball. The discussion may have nothing to do with their respective programs. The whole discussion may be about breaking the zone-trap, rebounding or expansion of the tournament.

Well, just because it worked for KF, doesn't mean it worked for Lick. Even though KF is stoic, he does have some charisma and (I'm told by women I know) some looks.

KF is a great coach but I think his lack of "sparkle" with the media did hold him back and slow the success.

The right new BB coach can succeed without a "presence" but the turn around will be quicker if he can look comfortable on camera which will carry over to recruiting visits and interaction with fans/alumni.
