Coach...

He'll always be remembered as the guy who rescued us from hell.

People talk about how hard it is for KF to recruit. Imagine it is 1979. Your program has been to two bowl games in its history, both of which happened before any of the recruits were born!!! Current NFL alumni almost non-existent. Literally no other B1G team has a longer non-winning streak. Your facilities are unimpressive and your stadium isn't exactly new. National award winners? A few, again born before the recruits existed. Recruiting pipelines??? None. In-state talent?? More likely to be impressed with Iowa State's recent accomplishments than Iowa's. National media presence? None. National brand? Rodney Dangerfield gets more respect. History of legendary coaches? Recruits more likely to read articles on Iowa as a coaching graveyard. Athletic department able to give you a jet (like the current HC) for recruiting? Puhleeeezz. Athletic department budget? Smaller than many of your rivals. Academic standards? Higher than any of the southern schools you'd like to steal from.

Optimism for Fry to draw upon? Even Bump said this might be his last hire. So not much optimism.

Fry had everything working against him, except one thing. And he mentioned it in his autobiography. A loyal fanbase. Loyal to the school. Fry took the job and realized the fanbase (thru marketing and willingness to travel to bowl games) could help him build something special at Iowa.

Now, thanx to Fry and Ferentz, Iowa routinely goes to bowl games and plays against college royalty, and has even jumped the likes of Michigan for preferential treatment in bowl selection.

Fry is a legend on Earth, and on Asgard.

The more you hear about Hayden the more you realize how lucky Iowa was to get him and what a huge impact he made on the state, not just athletics. He will always be remembered as a true Iowa Icon and one of the great characters of college football.

Very neat article and as far as the end of the article about the fans throwing a tirade at Hayden it very seldom happened. A few blowouts maybe like the Sun Bowl was it against Ariz St and maybe the bowl loss against Cal where the hawks looked slow, unathletic but very seldom Fry deserved any criticism. He built the program to a #1 ranking and 2 Rose Bowls in 6 years something unheard of and I would say not dreamed of by many people back then.

When Hayden's hire was announced on the radio, two friends and I were pheasant hunting near Tama. Our comment was, "Hayden who?" Guess we found out!

My first game was Minnie vs Iowa 1980 in Minneapolis at the old Brick (I think they call it). It was Hayden's 2nd year. I think I remember Hayden had Reggie Roby kicking field goals as our secret weapon. We lost and we weren't really very good that year. It was Hayden's 3rd year that we shocked the world by beating Nebraska and Michigan (and a highly rated UCLA team).

My folks had season tickets. I got to go to one game a year. In 81 I picked that UCLA game. Somehow, after barely more than 2 years under Hayden, they were clearly better than #10.

Interestingly, HF with his reputation as a risk taker.....what kept him from getting better was being predictable. Really good coaches with real talent could pick HF apart. I think it was UCLA that said they knew what Iowa was going to do, especially on defense. In close games he most always went to Prevent Defense which prevented a few more wins.
