"Clean up some things"

Ferentz on penalties and missed assignments. I really get tired of hearing that response. We need new tackles, wide receivers, new offensive and defensive schemes, and a team that gives plays like there is no tomorrow. I'm afraid a power wash a'int goint to do it!
"Turn out the lights the parties over" as Dandy Don used to say.. For you youngsters back when Monday night football was big

What's he gonna say? Coach speak is annoying but what's the benefit to letting anyone know what you're thinking? There is none.

One of the knocks on KF, a legitimate one, is that in his mind as long as you play mistake free, you are in every game. The problem wit that is 3 fold...
1) it only applies when there isn't an enormous talent gap (when is that last time Iowa beat a clearly better team in an upset)
2) it promotes gameplan that also keep games close when you are the team with more talent
3) when you have 2 above, and STILL make multiple mistake, you lose to teams you shouldn't.

The players are absolutely killing drive with stupid penalties. Case in point. 2nd and 1 at Iowa's 37, run for a first down, move the chains.....oh but wait, facemask penalty by the OL, back it up 15....then a false start, back it up 5 more yards. Now a 2nd and 21 instead of 1st and 10. We have to punt now from the 17, they get the ball at the 50, and they score. That isn't coaching, that is stupid, stupid penalties killing a drive, and giving them great field position. They have done this in each of the last 3 games.

Not trying to blame the refs, but two more drive killing NON CALLS, was the obvious pass interference by jNW on 3rd down, then we have to punt, instead of getting a 1st down. Then later the refs missed an obvious CJ facemark that would have given us a first down, instead we punted once again.

Those killed 3 drives. They were all huge plays in the game, giving jNW the ball when they didn't deserve to get the ball. All incredibly frustrating.

Agreed, but sometimes I feel that KF truly believes cleaning up a few things is all that needs to be done. If the goal is to go 8-4, he may be correct. If you want to have a shot at beating teams like Mich, Ohio State, even Wisc, or nebby....it's gonna take more than that.

Also, after 5 games, it isn't clear we cleaned up anything. Same mistakes, same plays, same schemes.

It really means we lack talent. That's the reason for the mistakes in the first place so it really cannot be fixed with the same player or players.

That is exactly right. Cleaning up a few things gets this team to mediocre. That should not be the head coaches goal. Maybe after all these years his mind is still in the NFL where 10-6 gets you playoffs every year.

KF is delusional.. He coaches like he has Alabama talent, when in reality he has FCS talent, at best.

In typical KF fashion though his teams NEVER dig themselves out. After any penalty or "lack of execution" our drives are dead in the water. Get behind the chains on first down, and we may as well punt on 2nd. Unexpected shit happens, like poor officiating. KF's problem is he coaches so conservatively, coupled with our horrible offensive schemes, that one or two things go wrong or we don't execute a few plays and we lose to dog shit teams like Iowa State. So incredibly tired of our margin of error being so razor thin.

Agree.
Coaches can't come out & say we don't have enough talent - even when it is true.
What we are seeing is years of recruiting and playing 2 stars and walk-ons. With decent coaching you can develop this talent to be a .500 B10 team over the years. For some reason, the IA coaches and their defenders accept that.
If this team is to go to the next level we need more talent.
Unfortunately, it seems few if any upper level players want to come to Iowa. Is that on the coaches, the facilities, the environment? All of the above?
Maybe we just need a change in direction and attitude after 20 years? Too bad we are handcuffed for 8 more years with someone who can't or won't change these things.

If you look around the country and watch other teams on Sat, it's very easy to see why no one with better offers want to play for a dinosaur like KF who would rather his skill positions block really we instead of being an actual threat to score. It's boring and stale for me. Imagine the perception of teenagers? KF is, and will continue, navigating our program further into the abyss and irrelevancy. All while becoming filthy rich in the process.

I think they need to do a deep dive overhaul and question some of their assumptions about scheme, talent, coaching methods and the coaches themselves.

The issues are everywhere.
