CJB: QBR 4Q 2015 vs 4Q 2016

Are you laying this all on him? I started thread a couple days ago and expressed my opinion that when he has time and can step and throw he is great. I bet him and Matt Vandeberg especially worked out a lot together between spring and august drills as they just had a great chemistry on hard to throw routes. But that was mostly against the non-conf and no one has yet replaced Tevaun Smith who could take a slant or hitch for long runs.

Get the pass blocking and blitz pick ups better , run the ball better, stay under center more, and the passing game might look really good with play action and straight drop backs. The hawks just dont run well/or even often out of shotgun so that formation is a giveaway.

More blame on the OL and WRs, than CJ Beathard.

I simply don't get the shotgun formation. If the excuse is Ferentz is an old school guy that doesn't like to mix it up on the offense. Then he should stick with that. SO WHY on the 2nd or 3rd and mediums do they turn into a shotgun spread offense, especially around the end zone? Not only do they not fool anyone in the normal offense, but why take the run totally off the table when you're inside the 15, or 10, or 5? Gee, lets see how difficult we can make it for ourselves when the defense goes from knowing the run is coming to knowing the pass is coming...GOOD GOD. soooo painful.

I really think he's been more hurt than people think and it has affected his throws and mobility. I just don't think the staff is talking about it, rightfully so.

I truly believe this may be the biggest reason for CJ being a little off. Along with less protection, he's a touch more hesitant to take off a seems to be a step less elusive.

I still say Davis and the WR can help him out more than they are.

One really good game where he stays clean could do wonders for him, his confidence.

How long are we going to use the injury excuse though? Last year, especially towards the end of the season, I agree he was beaten up, but he should have recovered in plenty of time for this season. I'm just not sure I buy that he's hurt. I think Ferentz has mentally hurt him more than anything.

That's all possible. CJ does look a step low though and I do think he's more tentative, for some reason. I think it's that it's likely that it's actually a combination of things.

Totally agree. I see a lot of teams have one running back in the backfield and sometimes standing right next to the QB. This gives the QB a few options; Mis direction play by faking the handoff to the running back going one way and keeping the ball but run in the other direction. Two; faking the handoff and passing the ball with rolling out to add time for receivers to get open. If it's not there then tuck and run. Three; The QB takes a quick look after the ball is snapped and then hands the ball to the running back, the running back can do three things here, look for a hole to run through, do a half back pass, or flea flicker the ball back to CJ for a pass.

I guarantee if you mix it up like that on a regular basis the opposing defense will be on their heals the whole game not knowing what's coming next........ and neither will the fans which would make it so fun to watch.

Waaahhh....all I've heard for the last 12 games is about him being hurt........he wasn't that good last year (like I've explained over and over) the difference is our run game, our run defense, and our turnover margin, like I've said over and over for a looooong time now.............

I do think he's a decent QB.

And I think you have a point Ick, the variables you mentioned above went our way, or were a positive for us last year. So far this year, we don't stop the run (minus MN), we don't generate turnovers, and we're inconsistent with our running game due to odd play calling.

Switch those around to 2015 levels, and we probably are undefeated.

But we're not. Cause that's football. snort

But even with all of those things going our way, we still needed CJ to make plays to win close games that very few QB's at Iowa have been able to make. Last year he had a knack for making plays in the 4th quarter to put games away. This year it hasn't happened. Who knows, maybe he just got lucky a lot last year and this year his luck ran out. Lol......lol........lol.....morons.

One thing I don't see getting a ton of attention is the fact that with Vandeberg gone, Iowa is effectively down 5 of its top 6 pass-catchers from last season. That is a lot to replace all at once. I see promising signs the last couple of games from Jerminic and Jay, but they need to continue to improve. Hopefully Fant or someone else steps up as a 2nd TE.

Riley and Kittle (and Nash I suppose) are the only upperclassmen out there, and only Kittle out of anyone has really seen a lot of playing time prior to this year. Will they get better? I think they will. Jerminic in particular reminds me alot of Tevaun as a true soph and he turned out pretty well. The question to me is how quickly they improve.

Quickly, name ANY o f Drew Tate's five star, stud receivers..............??? Lol........

Clinton Solomon may have not been a 5 star, but I am taking him over Riley McCarron. Hinkle is a given. Brodelll it took a while before the light bulb came. None of this matters because kok was the OC not GD.
