CJ?

Coach EJ was at the Polk County I Club this week. This quote from EJ was about CJ from a thread on TOS.

"He spoke about C.J said he needs to speed things up. Says he is going at his pace at practice and in the classroom-needs to get a sense of urgency about him. This spring will be big for him."

If he wants to start this next season, he better start working his *** off or he will find him self watching from the side line. There are a lot of 3* recruits which are willing to put out the work so they have a chance to play in the NFL. This is part of the problem I have with 5* recruits. A lot of them have an entitlement mentality and never put out the work to get better. I hope some one gives him a good kick in the butt.

Can't make a kid want it. Time to take a look in the mirror for CJ and decide want he wants to get out of College and FB.
And the star's a kid carries only means we are more disappointed not that they are any different than any other kid out there.

Hopefully with the number of TEs we have coming in CJ will step his game up. He will have a lot of competition for the next three/four years.

Or he'll transfer. Though, if he transfers because he got passed up by 2* or 3* recruits, then I suppose we wouldn't want him anyway.

I'm guessing he thinks that he's the automatic #1 or #2 TE. Hopefully the reality that hard work often trumps talent at Iowa will wake him up.

i was in HS with a kid who was 6'5'' and 280 lbs and was a pretty athletic. got some looks from D1, but never materialized because he had no work ethic and would regularly get beat buy lesser guys. happens a lot, actually. that's why the bob sanders' and mitch king's of the world become so iconic, because of the 'want to'.
not that this describes C.J. as i don't know anything about him, just something i've noticed over the years about these type of situations.

That is the great thing about 4 and 5 stars. They are big and have more talent than others, so two things can happen. 1: The player works hard to make something of himself and ends up playing on Sundays or 2: The player uses his size and talent to make others on the team better who actually want to work hard and become better (sanders, king, etc.). Either way, they are making the team better by either becoming great or making other players great.

I'm not saying this didn't happen, but why would EJ essentially call a player out publicly about his work ethic....especially at a venue like the Polk County I-Club? That's pretty out of character for this staff. Those things are normally kept in-house. Can anyone else who was there corroborate this? Jon, weren't you the MC?

My guess is for motivation.

The middle paragraph is close to quote of EJ. Simply said CJ needed to increase his tempo or something to that effect. The rest of it was posters opionion
Needing to step up pace/tempo is a common issue for many incoming freshmen. I am confident that CJ will pick things up and we will be glad he did.

Does anyone on here recall what Brad Hermann said this past year, after his promising frosh season and less-than-stellar growth after his early success? Something along the lines of "I finally realized that I was wasting a golden opportunity, and I had to kick it in gear to make the most of the time I had left. I had been coasting and resting on my laurels."

Not a direct quote, but a necessary realization for Brad to see the field after KF labeled the TE group as "needy."

He specifically said they were working with CJ to uptempo from high school tempo. It was descriptive and not critical. The comment about urgency was a common developmental challenge for freshmen including CJ. I didn't get any sense of a problem and coach was very reticent to comment on individual players or situations as "the less I say, the less I have to take back." I think because he is his position coach there is naturally more intensity with his own guys. All good and points to the future of PT for CJ given more intensity and this spring is the first step.

Have to keep in mind every kid is handled different, maybe he is already the best just not the best he can be in EJ's eyes maybe he needs the tough love. I'm sure if it happened it happened for a reason that nobody, but EJ and CJ know why.

I agree with the assertion here.

I don't think that the issue has nearly as much to with "calling CJ out" as much as Coach Johnson simply pointing out to some fans that CJ isn't "THERE" yet. Thus, fans shouldn't place undue expectations on CJ until he makes the next few steps in his development.

I recall some reliable fans stating that Zusevics played on the scout team his during his redshirt year and was totally off the radar. He just didn't "get it" at that point. However, in just in the matter of a year (or something like that) ... all of a sudden he just "clicked." My impression is that Zusevics started gaining extra motivation because the possibility of earning playing time became all the more tangible because we were losing so much depth on the OL at the time. Anyhow, all of a sudden we starting hearing buzz about Zusevics ... and the rest is pretty much history.

Thus, I kinda anticipate that a similar scenario may just occur with Fiedorowicz.

Of course, I think that the coaches may have been hoping for Keenan Davis to click like that last season ... and while Keenan had nice flashes, he still didn't make enough strides to displace Sandeman.
