This is a must read. Long, carefully written, and, balanced.

I have a subscription, but read this on Facebook. Fry: Can this be seen on HN? I don’t know the rules. Also, I don’t know how to Link stuff.

Whatever can be done to encourage my friends on HN to read this article would be enlightening.

I read it. And yes, very good. article. The main points that I took away is that there are lots of reasons to keep Fran and lots of reasons why they might not. It got into the math of what it would take to move on and it's not as simple as just paying $4 million to buy him out. And probably the biggest takeaway from it for me was how far behind we are in NIL $$ in the B1G. Top teams at $8 million and we are at $1.5 which is towards the bottom. That doesn't necessarily fix itself you move on from FM.

So what is the buyout number after April 6th…doesn’t it drop to 2.5 after that?

All the more reason to move on in my opinion. This is is a good way for Iowa to know what resources it needs to bring in a good coach.

Haven't read the article yet, but when an organization has a 150 million dollar budget (and that doesn't include donor money), you don't let a relatively low buy out number distract you from making a move to improve your second largest revenue producing product. And to be clear, I am not advocating for Fran being fired. There are arguments both ways and it is a tough call, but if Beth is counting pennies to help her make this decision she is not quite the leader I thought she was.

As much as I bang on Nebraska, the balls they showed by firing Scott Frost when they did shows the type of decisive leadership that is needed in modern athletics. You make the right decision for your university first and figure out how to pay for it second.

Not from what the article said. It stated that the buyout required is $4.2 million as of April 1. Could be spread over three years. Not sure anything changes after April 6, at least this article doesn't say that.

Thought there was a significant drop off in the buyout after April 6th. Leistikow would have mentioned it in the article if there was one, so I guess I am wrong on that .

Like a lot of things this isn’t as simple as it appears.

If Fran leaves it’s not going to be him getting fired. It’ll be a mutually agreed upon retirement.

Frans isn’t the only buyout if he leaves. DeVries also has a buyout that has to be paid to WV.

WV isn’t going to let him go without offering a big restructure including more money.

There’s a lot of layers to this thing.

I've stated before that my gut says that Fran is gone after this season. If he's stays, I would say that the chance he is here after next season is < 10 %.

I agree with Fry. It is highly unlikely he gets fired. I just don't see it happening when factoring in his body of work over the years, and the fact that his resurrection of the program coming out of the Lick years bought him some serious (almost permanent) good will.

If he leaves this year or next, my guess is that the main driver will be his loss of passion around the program and community. That's not to imply that he doesn't care - He does, especially about the players themselves. Always has.

But, his weariness and loss of passion nevertheless are palpable. All fan bases have distasteful elements, but at some point I think all coaches need a fresh start to get reenergized and invigorated. From the outside looking in, I think Fran has reached that point.

Good summary, hd

Yup

No. Read it or not.

Okay, I read it…now what? Goetz needs 300-400 million dollars to put suites into Carver, a structure, that is built underneath the dirt. Tell me what she is selling to get that done? She is already on the fundraising trail looking for money…tell me what she is selling?

Not sure what his buyout is, but DeVries turned down a raise and extension this week. WV fans (not sure what they know) say he wants the Iowa job. Also, with tinfoil hats on, say that Tucker isn't hurt but is being held out with hopes of getting an extra year to play at Iowa. In their eyes, Darian is already in Iowa.

Why in the world would I know anything about that? Geeze.

Fran will still be my favorite Iowa basketball coach. Davis was good, but also overrated. He gets a lot of cult worship because of the “Doc Tom” thing.

He was a horrible recruiter who’d rather be golfing, and people forget he inherited that elite team he had. Once that team was gone he didn’t really do much except go on a slow slide into mediocrity. He whiffed on LaFrentz, Collison, and Hinrich before NIL, and Fran recruited Garza and the Murrays. The recruiting era Fran has had to operate in is orders of magnitude tougher with unlimited free agency and essentially no money to work with compared to the rest of the Big Ten and P6 in general.

Of all Iowa coaches, Fran did the most with what he had to work with and was the best recruiter by FAR. This will piss some people off, but he’s the best one we’ve had in the job.

Where in the actual F are you getting $300-400 million dollars? Pinnacle Bank Arena in Omaha cost $180 million to build an entire brand new arena from scratch. Good god man.
