Catching up on some DVR games

So, I screwed my back up pretty bad a couple of nights ago and I've been home from work pretty much confined to a couch the past two days. Daytime TV sucks so I decided to go to the trusty DVR and watch some of the games from last season I had saved. Watching the Iowa/ISU game right now. I had forgotten just how dominant we were that 1st half. I mean, our defense didn't get introduced until the second half because ISU's offense was barely on the field. The disparity between the teams is mind blowing. ISU's defense looked like a high school team compared to us. I think they would have to make leaps and bounds this season to compete with us.

And that was with them coming off of a bowl victory from the prior season.

Of course, one of the bigger issues for them is that they got hit on BOTH lines due to attrition and graduation.

Going into 2011, the OL might not take as much of a step backward because they have another year in the system ... however, the Cyclone D is the group that is most likely to take a bigger leap. Of course, that assumes that Lattimer isn't suspended for the Iowa game. If Lattimer is suspended for the Iowa game ... then they're going to be pretty screwed.

Agreed. I also think they are going to be kind of weak at QB. Tiller still looks to be the main guy and he was less than stunning whenever he was under center the last two years. If Jantz or one of the younger guys doesn't step up and Tiller remains the QB I think ISU is going to have a lot of problems putting points on the board.

I watched the Michigan St. game last night. I can not believe a team can be so good and beat the #5 team in the U.S and then turn around and lose to bad teams like Northwestern and Minny mouse U.

A couple of my friends that are ISU diehards were at the game and sitting in the first couple of rows on like the 20 yard line. We were texting back and forth. I remember I sent one that said I was looking for them on TV but we passed the 20 yard line so quickly that it was just a blur. That was a butt whooping. Hoping for more in 2011.

That will forever be the mystery of the 2010 Hawkeyes.

I think they put up a statistic for total yards at some point in the 2nd quarter.

Total Yards:
Iowa 222
ISU 6

Or something like that...

One issue for the Cyclones is that their interior line has some potential in '10. I really like McDonough. Also, Rumpolhamer (they call him "Dutch") is a pretty tough guy to move ... and plays with great leverage. Lastly, they've added what seems to be some quality depth in Pompey (plenty of beef and athleticism) and a big JUCO transfer too.

Lattimer is arguably the best DE that they have against the run. The JUCO DE, Nelson, who had to sit out a season due to grade-issues sounds like he could be a pretty explosive player for them ... however, when coaches say that, it usually implies that the guy can be good rushing the passer ... but that is often at the cost of overpursuit ... that hurts against the run.

While I won't go as far as Mesaclone when it comes to talking up their LBs ... I will admit that the 'Clone LBs are darn good. Definitely high quality players with plenty of talent.

Also, the 'Clones have a solid group of DBs too. However, not unlike Iowa, they were forced to move one of their CBs over to safety (Benton). Thus, I'm not certain how consistent the ISU safety play will be early in the season.

I think that the Cyclone starting D looks pretty darn solid on paper ... however, the bigger problem with their D regards overall depth and experience. They don't have a whole lot (of experienced depth) at a number of important spots (safety and LB, in particular). And that lack of depth could hurt them.

Furthermore, as you rightly point out, it's not at all clear to me how good the Clone O will be.

Skimmed through Penn State game last night. We shoulda blown them out, but our offense wasn't playing great except for the first quarter. Defense completely shut them down, besides a few plays that got em down the field.

Don't forget, we have dominated ISU like this for 2 years in a row.

There is definitely a gap in talent between the two programs, but KF and Co have blown games to ISU and many other inferior opponents over the years, and Rhoads is the kind of guy that can lose by 50 one week and rally the troops for a surprising upset the next.

Anything can happen in Ames.

Classic case of KF going ultra conservative with a decent lead and a great D. We completely shut the whole thing down in the 2nd half.

BTW, I am not at all complaining about the gameplan, just making an observation.

Chop block on Clayborn. Injuries to LB's. Guards going down. Neilson going down. Head shot to ARob. Really it is pretty easily explainable.

Good luck with that. I'm going on five years of constant pain now. Life is great.:(

It couldn't have happened at a worse time too. I was supposed to bowl state tournament this weekend in Davenport but that's off the table now. I'm not as worried about that though, the bigger issue is in two weeks when I am supposed to drive out to San Fran/Reno for a weeks vacation and to bowl in the National Bowling tourney. That vacation has pretty much been prepaid and the hotels had a no refund policy because of the rates I booked. Combine that and the cost of entering the tourney I could be out about a G if I can't go.

Even if you do lose a G, count yourself lucky if you are able to recover, because it REALLY sucks if you don't. Most people do, though; I seem to be among the unfortunate 10% who don't.
