Cartwright & Baasbe are Better than Larson and Brust

Every day I feel better about the job Fran is doing as the new leader of Hawkeye Hoops. Does anyone else think we are better this yr because he brought Baasbe and Cartwright instead of having Larson and Brust?

Have you ever seen Larson play? Just curious as to what you are basing this off of? I do agree that we have two real good players in Cartwright and Basabe.

already loving Basabe's mid range jumper and ability to finish with both hands. Cartwright can definitely create his own shot as well. Liking both of their games..

Don't know about Larson, but I think Brust saw that his game didn't mesh with Fran's style of basketball, and wanted to get out. In that way, Cartwright is a better fit for this team than Brust.

We are better off having Cartwright this year than Brust because of his athleticism and quickness with the ball. We needed a pg who could break the press and who could get to the basket. I see Brust as being more like cully Payne than like Cartwright.

Brust may go on to have a nice career at Wisky, but Cartwright fills the position better right now.

I would have like to have Larson and Basabe, but both players have a lot of upside.

Pretty tough to make that claim at this point. I'm happy with the progress Cartwright and Basabe are making as the season progresses, but Larson hasn't played yet this year and Brust is only averaging 4 minutes a game and it's all in garbage time so there really is nothing to compare them.

Aside from a 3-point shot from May, Basabe's mid-range jumper has been our most reliable shot. For a frosh, his composure is darn impressive.

In addition to what Basabe and Cartwright are contributing to this year's team, I think they also are key to demonstrating a style of play that will help Fran attract fast, shifty PGs and more athletic forwards who can shoot for the future.

I don't mind losing Brust at all. He may end up being a productive player, but I think Fran wants a different kind of player at the guard position. I would have still liked to get Larson on campus though. I think it would have help our depth at the PF position....

All water under the bridge though. I like what we have in place, and love Fran's coaching philosophy!!

I don't think there is any doubt that Cartwright will help establish a change over the next 2 years better than Brust would have. Fran recognized in one day what Lick didn't recognize in three years...you need options at point. Brust would not have been a good option early. And objectively you say he was beat out by another lower ranked guard for playing time at Wisconsin to support this. Cartwright does have some flaws but I can't imagine where we would be without him. In two years if McCaff can show at least some signs of progress than the recruiting will have turned around, it won't matter if Brust does become a good player.

Larson is harder to predict. I love Basabe but Larson could have possibly competed for minutes at the 5 with Cole, Brommer and Archie. However, things I had heard kind of questioned his work ethic and toughness. Don't know if this was true and since Florida RS him you can't say. My conclusion is I would rather have Basabe if it was one or the other but both may have been nice.

Either way, for those worried about the coaching change putting the roster behind I think was unfounded. The roster is at least as good right now as it was going to be if Lick stayed and probably better.

Ideally, we would have...

Basabe, Larson and Fuller all on the squad. Then you would really have 3 frontcourt guys who could all get up and down the floor, and all who have skill. Cartwright was a huge pickup nad has proven to be the key player for this team. Just a completely different skill set than Brust, and one this team needed desperately.

this wasnt meant as a rip on larson but if they hadnt fired Lick we would be looking at:

brust, larson, marble, cole, brommer, mcabe, gatens and May, maybe fuller and a injured cully

compared to: cartwright, baasbe, and this yr team

I think this yrs team has more athletes and is better, along with a coach that inspires the Hawkeyes fans more.

I was assuming that Fuller would be off the squad even if Lick stayed. I really don't know what kind of player Larson is yet but he would probably be helping the team.
