Carter Kingsbury Enters Portal

I wonder if McCollum basically told him that there wasn’t room for him and he would be better off going elsewhere.

IMO, he could be a 10-12 point a game scorer in the Missouri Valley. No idea what the current Drake roster looks like, but riding it out in Des Moines for his final season wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world, given his talent and/or skill set.

Maybe. I thought keeping a legacy recruit would be semi important. Especially if one reason for moving on was to be more Iowa and connect with the fans. Fans love seeing former players kids stay, even as walk-ons.
100% It doesn't make much sense to me that CK would want to leave going into his senior year. Even if he woulda had to walk on again or whatever I'd think he'd rather do that to finish out his career. My guess is it was Bens call telling him to move on but I could be wrong.

Man. Thought Koch returning may keep Kingsbury around. His father will always be one of my favorite hawks of all time. Sad to see him decide to move on. Can’t blame him.

He was a walk on for most of his career.. who cares , he'd be better off at a mid major..

I ponder at times whether as the portal closes and the staff still has roster spots to fill if they might not look at some of the guys that went into the portal and haven't found anything they like, if they wouldn't be open to coming back, of course, on BM's terms?

Also, recruiting doesn't end when the portal closes. Think of all the incoming frosh across the country that de-committed due to coaching changes and the like, many might still be looking for landing spots. Have any of the four recruits we had found roster spots yet?

My guess is he was welcomed back but that there would not be a scholarship for him. And he probably already has a degree or can get one from Iowa soon, so it makes more sense to try to get a scholarship somewhere else, have fun playing in games, and pick up a masters for free.

who cares? Do you know how important these players, walk on or not can be to a program? A lot of fans will definitely care as they enjoy rooting for the players sons. Just because someone isn’t stacking stats on game day doesn’t mean they aren’t a vital piece of the team.

We have so many spots left to fill before it matters that he's taking one.
Exactly.. Telling him to leave now seems premature if anything too. He has damn near half the roster yet to get. There's a 12th man on every team he's shown he's capable and willing to do that. Going into his senior yr I bet Carter woulda liked to have graduated a Hawkeye. Be it on scholly or not.

I think Ben is looking for two Bigs at this point. Someone else on the forum mentioned he has one big committed but is holding back on announcing who that is. He himself mentions this in the article below. He also talks about what he is looking for with remaining holes to fill. I shared this same link on another thread but since there is a lot of talk on this thread also I thought I would drop the link here also.

There are thousands of kids in the portal, Iowa is a B1G school, they are going to have no issues filling their scholarships with players at a higher level than Carter. Carter was a good kid and a legacy walk on. He lacked size and like someone said above, he probably already graduated and will be graduating soon and he likely was told "hey, you can stay, but you aren't likely going to be a big part of things moving forward and you could go somewhere else and start and have a great Sr. season somewhere else?"

I personally think that there are TONS of great players in the portal who were underused, under developed and flying under the radar. A lot of big players have mostly blown their wad. Iowa is going to get some good pieces over the next several weeks.

A relative of Matt Gatens said that he's kind of being pushed on and won't be retained and I saw some other people closer to the situation stating that Carter was urged out.

I wonder why. There's nothing wrong with having a guy like Kingsbury as a 13th best player and Gatens was a very popular player who Ben had to have been a fan of, so is he hearing that Gatens is such a bad coach he isn't worth the shot? I think both of these situations are strange.

i sense BM just wants his guys going forward, no Fran baggage, except for Koch.

My God. People are lamenting Kingsburry because he was a “legacy” roster filler.? No disrespect to Carter but gee, wonder why Iowa’s mediocrity has been tolerated for so long?
Sit back and enjoy your ice cream. It’s a fresh, new era in Iowa basketball.
