Can hawks do a box and 1 against Stauskus-type gunners?

Do you think Fran has worked the team on this Dee? Not that you would play it for a lot of a game but do you think mixing it in with man and zones would help against a gunner?

Who would be the best defenders against a gunner in a Box and 1, Marble? I think Marble was put on some good scorers last year and did well.

The four guys in the box need to hustle like crazy to cover the corners but that is the deal.

I thought the double teaming defense really threw off Mich for several minutes as they had to rush shots at the shot clock and had a few turnovers it seems.
 
Box and 1 is very gimmicky...rather stick with our normal defense.

i would go with someone like Uthoff, white, or basabe. Athletic but taller than staukus (sp?). I don't trust marble as a defender as he is not a stopper by any means. Problem is we don't have a lockdown defender on the team. We have good team defenders but no one that can just shut someone down.

Would not work. Why does everyone think Stauskus is nothing but a gunner? He's a complete player. He finds the open man, great driving and passing abilities.
 
they need to make him do one thing... not give him both options...

Best way to guard Staukas is to get up on his hip and make him go his weaker direction... if he beats his man help off the weakest shooter.

Letting him rythm dribble into 3 pters is a no no

You realize White was who we started out matched up on him.

I said it in another thread but I anticipate marble to be the one to guard him at carver.
 
I don't know about box and 1, but running man and just having Stauskas' man face guard and just deny the ball would be pretty effective, I would think. We kept Hollins from getting the ball for much of the second half against Minny; the best way to stop Stauskas is to deny him the ball. Once he has it, you're in trouble.

I believe you go with those taller, longer guys to face guard him and not allow him the ball. Make someone else beat us.

Yeah, you definitely try to deny him the ball. Every once in a while going box and one and the man who has the gunner stays on him as tight as possible.

I agree that stauskus is more than a gunner but the box and one is to try to deny the ball.

Someone mentioned Eric May and he was really good at chasing, making it through screens to be right on his man.
 
I considered the box and 1 as well. The problem with junk defenses is they don't tend to work unless everyone knows exactly what to do. The downside outweighs the upside IMO.
 
Box and one works in high school when teams only have one guy. Teams like michigan would take advantage of it with their other nba talent players.
