CA QB Spencer Petras Speaks on Hawkeye Commitment

Think I preferred the Wilson kid.. Would have liked him to visit and see if he'd say yes anyway. He's more mobile and pretty darn accurate. From Petras tape he seems to be a chucker most of his highlights were just throwing it deep. And with him deciding now knowing full well Wilson was about to board a plane to visit this weekend just smells. I mean he had just visited last week and reaffirmed to OSU after having done that. Nothing changed besides him being wishy washy. He had to of known Iowa was going to continue looking right? Just weird. Recruiting has to be frustrating because if your Iowa no way can they tell Petras wait till after Wilson visits we want to get to know him more and vice versa... They have to take him even if the other kid might be a better fit.
I get the whole higher ranking that Petras has and I by no means have seen every snap of both these guys. But from what I have seen I just feel Wilson may have been the better fit.

he definitely had good film. but to me petras is a 2nd nathan stanley. so, this should be good, also. i think wilson would have been on par with peyton mansell, so a really good prospect. but i just think petras is a step above. only time will tell.

I know we all hate ESPN (I do to) but they rate Petras as our second best recruit (same score as Waggoner). He scored an 80, a 4-star rating.

Yeah I'm high on Mansell too so if it plays out he's as good as advertised how good Petras is hardly will matter. He's 4 yrs away from seeing the field at the earliest.

And I think this is why we shouldn't fret so much about whether or not the coaches decide to redshirt [insert intriguing young player who gets only token snaps his true freshman year]. Playing the young guy likely pays off in the current year (depth) and the following year (a year of quality 1st/2nd team practice reps, some experience stepping on the field).

The down side is you lose a potential experienced starter on the team 4 years in the future. But that is so far away, who knows what will transpire in the meanwhile. Perhaps some other young guys will come in behind him and represent just as good or better an option by that point.

I am also guessing it would have been harder to recruit Petras has Stanley just finished his RS Freshman year instead of his Sophomore season.

Agree it's hard to look further ahead then a year almost nowadays. Between kids jumping around so much and coaches recruiting with the intent of leapfrogging a kid if they had a bad year. College programs are almost being ran as pro franchises.

The article says Boyle graduates in the Spring. Can that be right? He's only a true Soph. How can you squeeze football and 25 credit hours into a Semester?

I believe he is a true Junior. And if he had a bunch of credits transfer from High School, it is possible.

It's right. Boyle is a third-year sophomore. Quarells graduated in three years and transferred here.

boyle is listed as being in the 2015 class, so he's been here 3 years. so that is completely plausible; particularly, when you consider that is 2 summer sessions.
