Bye week couldn't come at a better time. Followed by another tune up game against Middle Tennessee State. Iowa's defense badly needs the next three weeks to try remedy a number of issues.
It's a chance to get the defensive secondary healthier. Hankins and Brents can take their time coming back from injury. Maybe give Geno Stone's knee a two week rest, and play Wes Dovorak against Middle Tennessee at strong safety. Jack Koerner and D.J. Johnson can use another manageable game against Middle Tennessee to gain experience.
Away from the defensive backfield, they need to address the situation on the defensive line. They need to get the backups at defensive end, Waggoner, Jones, and VanValkenberg some playing time. Going forward there needs to be some sort of rotation at defensive end to keep guys fresh.
Lattimore and Golston have been playing well. Epinesa and Nixon need to gain experience. They need to get someone into a rotation with Epinesa so he doesn't get gassed. They need to find ways to get more pressure from the defensive front seven.
