HN caught up with Butler Community College LB Will Honas, who talked with us about this weekend's official visit with the Hawkeyes:

I think they're just trying to build depth. Most of the guys on the roster are unknowns. Makes sense to bring in some JUCOs, especially as walk-ons.

Not sure where we stand with Honas and Van Summeren, but if the Hawks miss on both, LBs will be looking a little thin in coming years. I think this year's 2's have some potential, but it is hard to be fully confident without having seen much of them on the field.

One way to minimize the weakness of a thin/inexperienced LB corp would be to lean more heavily on nickel packages. It has been documented that "base defense" (i.e. 7 DL+LB, 4 DB) is no longer base in the NFL, the majority of snaps are played with 5 or more DBs on the field. With the talent Parker keeps producing on the back end, is it time to consider playing more nickel? If our DL strength comes to fruition, I think it would make this an even stronger possibility.

I agree. Our defense needs to be way faster. Much, much faster, in fact. A LOT faster.

Our DBs tend to tackle well, also. We could always play more "base" (4DL + 3LB) when matching up against Wisc, Minn, etc., but I think having nickel on for majority of time might play to our strengths.

For this year's team, that would have been Jewel and Niemann as the LBs, and to start the season, probably Taylor, Gervasse, Hooker, Rugumba, and Jackson on the back end. That looks pretty good as a unit, but I could understand not going that route for this past season (not much proven depth at DB, 3 year starters at LB). For next year our DB depth could be pretty good (depending on progression of young guys), and of course the LBs will be the opposite.
