IOWA CITY, IA - - University of Iowa junior offensive lineman Bryan Bulaga has decided to make himself eligible for the 2010 NFL draft. The 6-6, 315-pounder from Crystal Lake, IL, made the announcement today. He was the Big Ten 2009 Offensive Lineman of the Year and a first team all-Big Ten selection. Bulaga made the following statement:

“After much deliberation and careful consideration, I have decided to forego my fourth year of college eligibility and enter the upcoming NFL draft. This was not an easy decision since my Iowa experience has been very positive and rewarding.

The illness I was faced with at the beginning of the 2009 season made me realize how important football is in my life and how quickly it can be taken away. I want to thank Coach Ferentz, Coach (Reese) Morgan and the rest of the Iowa football staff who played a significant role in my development.

I will always be a Hawkeye and will carry that with me proudly wherever my future takes me. Thanks to everyone for the support you’ve always given me.â€￾

Iowa Head Coach Kirk Ferentz made the following statement:

“Bryan has been a valued team member, well beyond his outstanding play on the field. I’m very appreciative of his efforts on the team’s behalf. I am confident Bryan will do very well in the years to come and again be a valuable asset to his future team. We wish him the best and continued success.â€￾

This marks the second straight season the Hawkeye program has had at least one player declare early for the NFL draft. RB Shonn Greene left the Hawkeye program following his junior season in 2008 and was a third round draft selection of the New York Jets.

its jon's site, so im sure he felt "obligated" to do it from him and make it more official...and if you already read 2...why read this one...other than to post that?

Because the threads can probably be merged. We're a pretty savvy fan base, and news travels fast.

Kind of expected but still a big loss. Best of luck to Bulaga.

This is a big loss along with the seniors graduating as well. The O-line is going to have huge question marks next season and could be our Achilles' heel. And it hurts more because of what will be expected but with so many fresh faces and youth at O-line I would be lying if I told you I wasn't worried. With our style of offense, our running game and obviously protecting Stanzi so dependent on the O-line, this could really be a big problem next season. I know Kirk knows his stuff and sure hope we have great reserves that will fill in nicely, otherwise, we could see the huge impact of these losses in an 8-4 team compared to an experienced O-line and a 11-1 team.

Classy statement by Coach Ferentz, per usual. With all of his professional football experience, coach is such a valuable resource for his ballplayers. Best wishes to Bryan Bulaga. He can always finish his degree at his convenience, and he'll have probably have plenty of $ from his pro earnings to pay for it.

maybe the jets will draft him, and he could be blocking for greene again next year

He won't fall that far. The other side of this is that he is likely to end up on a bad team. With Shanahan going to the 'Skins, I can see them taking him if he's still available. Shanahan ran the same kind of zone-blocking scheme in Denver that Iowa runs, so Bulaga would all ready have a leg up.

the OL takes a big hit but I can't say I'm shocked given where he was projected before the bowl game and he turned Morgan into a non factor didn't hurt his draft stock.

Colts. Then the Colts could trade for Greene. Bob Sanders would be healthy. Dallas Clark will do what he did this year. Indianapolis Colts = Iowa Hawkeyes all decade team.

I still think he is not ready for the NFL yet. He is only 20 years old, and he was not as impressive as Gallery, Yanda, Stienbach, and other dominate OL men...

He pretty much shut Morgan down. But I do think he should stay. He'll do fine in the NFL though.

I think Reiff played into that as well. Reiff has really impressed me this year, maybe even more so than Bulaga has. Reiff is our next stud offensive lineman. He played very VERY good in the absence of BB and when BB came back, he was good enough to keep on the field as a RS freshman. I know we lose a lot on the o line this year but I think our o line is going to be pretty good come fall. We have a lot of young talent that can step up and become dominant....

Good luck to BB. Hope he has a great NFL career and also hopes that he falls to the Packers in the first round. We really need some help on the O-Line
