Branstad not interested in opening beer tap at Kinnick Stadium | Des Moines Register Staff Blogs

From article:

Gov. Terry Branstad expressed little interest today in selling beer stadiumwide at University of Iowa football games, saying he would be want to be “real careful†about considering such an idea in Iowa City.

Branstad, in response to a question from reporters today at his weekly news conference at the Iowa Statehouse, all but ruled out consideration of state approval for selling beer stadiumwide at Iowa Hawkeye games.

“I think you would have to be real careful about that. They have had a lot of drinking problems anyway, and obviously there is a lot of beer consumed in the parking lots before the game. So I don’t know that you need to be selling it in the stadium,†he said.

Iowa’s three largest universities — Iowa, Iowa State and Northern Iowa — currently sell alcohol in their stadiums only to people in luxury suites, and it’s likely to stay that way for a while, university officials told the Des Moines Register last year.

“Right, wrong or indifferent, the college model in a vast majority of the stadiums is not to sell beer in a broad way,†Iowa athletics director Gary Barta said.

The NCAA has no rule preventing alcohol sales at regular-season events. However, it bans sales and advertising of all alcohol during its 88 championships. Additionally, championship host sites must cover up alcohol-related advertising.

Um, yeah they'd crush the value of the club seating if they sold beer in the rest of the stadium. But speaking just for myself, I would probably drink less beer in the parking lot if I knew I could keep my buzz going during the game.

Same here but you know damn well the students wouldn't (at least those over 21).

After witnessing how many idiots there were around me at Soldier Field, I hope Iowa never sells beer in the stadium.

on a related note. I recall that you could not buy beer in Texas Statdium because it was in a "dry" area of Dallas county. They did allow you to bring in coolers - up to about the size of a playmate. People screamed - and Jerry Jones took note - that they wanted to allow alcohol sales. They got what they asked for. So much for $8 for a 12 pack in a cooler and hello to $8 for 20 oz glass.

If they do sell beer, they need to spend the revenue on about 8,000 new johns. Whenever I go to Kinnick, I stop drinking an hour before game time just so I can re-establish teh seal before I sit down, less I have to urinate during teh game and be gone for 15 minutes.

That, or I have to smuggle in my pee cup.

Any additional revenue would be spent on more security to handle the idiots who can't handle alcohol, not to mention puke patrol.
A poor idea.

Selling beer in Kinnick is about the worst idea I have heard this month, even in the face of the presidential election race.

As much as I would like to have a beer in the stadium, I can see the pitfalls of selling beer to the masses. There are too many idiots that can't handle a 2:30 kickoff let alone beer in the stadium.

You know this is coming down the road. It may not be next year or the year after, but you know this is coming. Too much money being left on the table. I agree with OK4P, if beer is in the stadium I would pace myself tailgating knowing I can wrap my hands around a brew inside. Charge $8 for beer and that will take care of the potential for problems with the students. There is a right way to do this.

They'd see a lot more revenue, I doubt there would be too much of a difference though. They should look at the statistics of altercations and whatnot at stadiums that started selling alcohol. It might be a concern that really doesn't pan out in practice.

Or there would be nobody in the stands and tons of people in the bathrooms and tons of fights.

Hard to imagine too many students wanting to pay 8 dollars per beer. I wouldn't have paid that much as a student, that's for sure. Students try to be frugal on as many fronts as they can be, alcohol being area number 1.

Do not do this. It is already difficult to listen to some fans wisdom in the stadium. The Soldier Field scenario is exactly what I hate about this. Fights. Idiots. Maybe the majority on her can get a buzz, and act respectable, but do you really want to take the chance on selling beer to "superfan"?

I go to University of Houston games and they have always sold beer(and margaritas). Its a pretty civil atmosphere. But thats the only way they would fill it up. But its a different environment than Kinnick. Have never seen a fight there.
