Brandon Scherff a Finalist for Outland Trophy

He doesn't deserve it. I am shocked more Hawkeye "faithful" haven't remarked on this. All Hawkeye fans should be ashamed that a guy on a 7-4 team is in the running, whether he is a Hawk or not.

At least that's what I've gathered from reading the last couple weeks of posts...

Back out...

It is pretty cool that he is a finalist. It is also puzzling since he obviously hasn't played to a level to merit the finalist status. Anyone that thinks he has has not watched every game this year, is biased or just plain doesn't know football.

That isn't a slam against the kid. It is jus a fact. He isn't one of the top lineman, based upon on field performance, this year.

He is the obvious choice for this award. He has been running people over despite knee surgery in the middle of the year.

Also he should be in major consideration for the Heisman. I wish that more lineman were given the at that.

Brandon hasn't had the year a lot of us expected, especially in pass protection. It's weird because it appears he's had some issues with speed rushers this year and he's been beaten to the inside, which rarely happened last year.

I still believe he's one of the most dominate run blockers in college football...and maybe the best with his athletic ability and downfield skills. I just have a hard time seeing him at LT in the pros at least early in his career. He would be a devastating guard in the NFL right out of the gate.

Is the Outland given to the best run blocker in the nation? If so he's got my vote. That said, I think we tend to give him a pass regarding his pass blocking abilities (not by any means saying he's not good at pass blocking) because he is an absolute beast when it comes to opening up lanes.

If you watch the video you will see that several of those pancake blocks were on passing plays. The blitz pick up video where he completely leveled the guy was on a pass play. In the highlight video he pancaked the same guy twice on a pass play.

Played with nagging injuries most of the year.....Not an excuse, but it does factor in his performance this year.

Read a post, elsewhere, where the writer tends to think Brandon won't win, because the
Award is on ESpin, where every award has to go to the SEcheat conference.

Would be cool if it went to Brandon, though. Very deserving for sticking it out for College Football in
his senior season. Go Hawks

His performance, based purely on results, hasn't warranted this honor. But I'd be willing to bet that the voters have taken his injury and quick return following surgery into account. Because he's played pretty damn well considering that he never got a chance to fully heal from that.

The anti Midwest bias makes me upset. He should win it easily if not for that. He should still win it by overwhelming the competition to the point where it overcomes the bias.

Perhaps he hasn't graded out at 100% this year, and there might be a better interior lineman somewhere in the country. But watching that video was pretty cool; he is definitely nasty, and I can't imagine many DE in the Big Ten enjoy lining up against him.

As I said, I don't think he's a poor pass blocker. Just that I think his pass blocking gets over inflated because of his ability to open holes and manhandle the dline as run blocker.

Or maybe his pass blocking has been affected by his knee injury more than his run blocking? Driving a guy forward puts a very different kind of stress on a knee than have to make quick lateral movements does.

Mel Kiper still has Scherffy in his Top 10 picks for the NFL draft. Do the 'posers', who are critical of
Brandon's play this year, just have the green-jealousy gene, more than most??

GO HAWKS

So by your way of thinking, Texas DT Malcom Brown doesn't deserve it either because Texas is 6-5 right now? We should just hand the award to Auburn C Reese Dismukes because Auburn is 8-3?

Or did I mess up and not see your sarcasm font?

From a macro-perspective, it's all good.

A winner, heck, a finalist even, in any of the major categories elevates the team, program and league. I just don't see a downside.

As many others have said, Iowa doesn't have beaches, a true blue-blood name, national championships, etc. It's solid, but not elite.

So sure, it's debatable whether actions justifies rewards in this case, but nevertheless, it shines a spotlight on the Iowa program, regardless of how temporary, when it desperately needs it.
