Box score, Basabe, and not getting any loose/50-50 balls

I was looking at the box score as I like to do:

1. No stat on 50-50 balls and rebounds but Wisky must have won 90% of them. I thought this was the deciding factor because the box score was really even. The hawks just couldnt seem to get their hands on these balls. Hawks made a lot of stops then couldnt handle a rebound. they need that focus back like in the Mich game.

2. Basabe only played one minute and had no stats except for that 1 minute. Basabe is almost always a big Plus player so as others said this really hurt.

3. Woody and Gabe had a decent double-double offensively but not defensively which doesnt show in the box score.

4. If we look at more of the Hockey style points for or against or the Plus-Minus rating, the last 4 or 5 games, marble, gesell, basabe, oglesby, are probably tops on the plus side, Gabe/Woody, white, uhtoff are probably about neutral, . Should players who are in a Minus category be getting less minutes?

I'm actually surprised more people aren't pointing out the Basabe thing. He is a very important player on this team - to have him almost completely absent from the game was huge, IMO.

We still had lots of chances in the game & need to make the most of those if this team hopes to get out of the 2nd round (which I think would be a good, doable goal for this squad), but you can't ignore the fact we were missing one of our most important "glue" players.

Baasabe leads team in rebounding. So those balls a couple of those 50/50 rebounds that bounced Wisky's for a putback would have been owned by Basabe above the rim. There were 2 that McCabe had a hand on that Mell wouldve owned.

Basabe shoots 60% from field. Mels skill sets are offensive rebound putbacks or 2nd chance finishes AT the Rim. 1 or 2 a game. Plus, he gives iowa a low post option to score. Those were not there by McCabe.

Defense. Basabe is another shot blocker. Mel would have challenged Nigels drive above the rim, not trying for the nonexistent block call.

Basabe is a plus plus guy for IOWAs offensive and defensive efficiency numbers. His presence makes this team a top 15 team, 22mn from Mel his replacements, is probably was the difference in this game.

Basabe has been playing great for the most part his entire senior year. He has been a consistent rebounder and an offensive force around the basket. When I saw that he was out, I took it as a very bad omen in regard to our ability to win the game. Not sure how this will affect our team next year as losing Marble and Basabe is going to be a major loss and, so far, I don't see suitable replacements.

Basabe also is getting a block shot/gm, excellent Given his mns played. To me, he is a perfect complement player, his statistical efficiency per minute is near highest on team.

Replacing his PPP for McCabes, given everything else is constant, is the difference in a close game like this.

True marble and McCabe blew the last 2 possessions, however if Basabe is healthy, IOWA is probably up 5 going into the final minute and wins at FT line.

I agree, Basabe might be one of the two or three most important players on this team. I said in another thread and I'll say it again here: I think he'll be harder to replace next year than Marble will be.

Basabe has better numbers this yr than last yr playing the same min and he is the most efficient he has ever been. He is collecting the same number of rebounds a game as his frosh yr with 5 less min per game to do it. He was missed yesterday.

^^ very possibly with his rebounding, defense and blocked shots and his offense is good also.

I wonder how many points he could average if they really tried to make the offense go through him?

Basabe being out of this game was the biggest single factor of the game. The leading rebounder on the leading rebounding team in the B1G, WI is last, is out and WI wins the rebounding battle 38-33 in Iowa City. Yeah, I think his absence made a difference. His rebounding and D being gone made a difference in particular because Kaminsky has been playing his best ball of the year.

We could use a player like say Willie Atwood to replace him next year.

Losing basabe was big but we only lost by 2 Rebs...35 to 33

This is a great thread. I would go so far as to speculate that with Mel at full strength, we win this game. Ironic, because depth is one of our greatest strengths, but key role players like Basabe, when they are missing in action, make winning much more difficult.
