Bohnenkamp: Best Yet to Come from Tyler Goodson

As long as he avoids injury Tyler is going to put up monster numbers, I see him having as many receiving yards this year as rushing. Probable leading the team in receptions this year. Getting the ball in space will make him electric this year.

It seemed to work well for Goodson to share time with Sargent last year. With Sargent now gone I hope Iowa finds a new quality backup to share time with.

At one time I thought maybe IKM had superstar potential, but injuries seemed to have disrailed his career. He's got one last chance for a comeback this year. I hope he makes the best of it.

After IKM, I really don't much of anything about Goodson's backups. Are any of them any good?

You are absolutely right to say a second running back behind Tyler is key to our run game and Tyler’s success.

Seeing the guy close up and in person for the first time the other day, he’s like a bigger, faster, stronger Wadley in my opinion. Kind of like the talk about Wadley not getting signed UDFA because of his small frame, Goodson has all the same moves and speed with more weight and muscle behind it.

I know he’s listed at 200 but I think he looks bigger than that.

That’s probably the best way to put it, IMO...according to Wadley he had to eat himself sick just to try and make his listed weight of 195 and probably never really got near it, T-Good probably has zero problem making 205 and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him at 215 sometime.

I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do this year. Kid has loads of potential and he seems to be a hard worker. That's a good combination.

I do want a solid second back to share the load. That's just the way football is today. I hope that can be IKM if he can recover from his ACL surgery.

A thick lower body and a thunderous ass seems to be the prototype. Yes, there are exceptions, but the 5'8, 200+ lbs. guy is what you are looking for. The guy "built lower to the ground" is what everyone points, too.

All that said, everyone knows the season begins and ends with Petras. How good or bad he is.... determines everything.

The kid from Dowling sounds like he is opening eyes as the back up, and he is 215 pounds. Maybe a bit of thunder and lightening, although Goodson can lower his head and blast through a safety as well.

As others have noted, the defense looks like it will be another top tier unit, and we have a lot of talent on the offense in the skills positions for a change. It will come down to whether our slightly undersized and inexperienced line and our second year QB can step up their games. This team has more range in possible win totals than any in recent memory.

Yeah Wadley was like 165 ish I bet initially and had a hell of a time getting to 175-180 and maintaining it. Dude was quick and ran with his eyes really well setting up blocks and cutting. He didn't quite have that extra gear speed wise which isn't the end of the world for a RB but for a guy built like him and how he'd be used it didn't help. I still think he coulda had a role in the NFL...

Goodson will be in the NFL I have little doubt of that. He offers everything Wadley did and more. I kinda hope he doesn't get all the way up to 215ish I'm afraid that might slow him down some. Although that'd probably be more of an NFL friendly size. He'd be built like how Garrison Hearst was if he did. Loved how he ran he was a really under appreciated player in his era.

I don't see the comparisons to Wadley. Wadley had some of the sickest jukes I have ever seen at Iowa. He was a very boom or bust runner. He could do something spectacular, or he could lose 3 yards. A very poor man's Barry Sanders. Goodson has some great moves, but he is much more of a one great cut and explode through the hole type runner, which actually fits Iowa's system better. And, I agree he has a real shot at the next level.
