Blocking rules

Poor Paulson got called for that BS chop block this week. And according to the rule book it should have been text book perfect he was well within 3 yards of the LOS at the time and was strait heads up with the guy. With how KF & BF teach Oline play is this going to continue to be an issue? I mean I dunno about you guys but I sure don't want any more big plays in bigger games coming up being called back due to that. My take is wouldn't it be easier to teach these guys to just NOT cut down on the defenders? I may be making a mountain out of a mole hill here because it's not a really frequent thing but these are 15 yard penalties and there's no good time to have one. Whatever's the easiest way to avoid getting them when they typically have little effect on the outcome of the play would be best in my eyes...

I think we see why Kirk hates this rule, it's a really hard rule to enforce as seen by the two garbage calls we've had against us so far this year

No doubt it's really tough to enforce correctly with all that the refs have to look at in real time. When talking about where you have 2 Olineman engaged one defender one high and one low sure I get why that's illegal but not with what Paulson did.. That's football. The terribly bad calls going on every week sure are adding up...

That was or sure seemed to be a very good block but like you say it is maybe best to throw your body in front of the defender and above their waist just to slow them down.

It is like getting a holding call on 2nd and short or third and short, why risk the 10 yard penalty when you might get a good run or pass without doing it.

The difference was that he didn't break any rules, the refs just made a bad call. He was within the tackle-box, hit him in the front and was closer than 5 yards from the neutral zone

In hearing Kirk explain it, it requires the referee to see and asses two things happening, not necessarily in the same location, at the same time, a virtual impossibility, given how fast this occurs.

For Iowa, Kirk has said this is how they have taught their guys to block up until this year, so you're now trying to teach upperclassmen to unlearn something they have spent countless hours learning to do, and then apply that new knowledge in the blink of an eye during the game. Not easy.

Exactly but if it's a possibility that the refs may call it (so far they've done it 2 out of 3 weeks) don't the coaches and players maybe need to adjust? I just worry that on some really big important play it'll happen and all sorts of you know what will hit the fan. If our lineman would just not cut down on them and stay on their own feet it's preventable. I say get the reteaching started and save yourself some preventable grief.
Some may say well it's like a bad holding call or bad PI call well sorta but man 15 yards hurts. Just food for thought

You're absolutely correct on that

Iowa is probably going to be called for this at least once every game. The officials are looking for it, and since Kirk has stated he will not change the ways he teaches the kids how to block, then the Hawks are going going to continue being flagged (whether legitimate or not). We just have to hope it doesn't end up costing the Hawks a game because of it.

I was just thinking, could this rule be a bigger factor this week because Wisconsin runs a 3-4 defense?

KF has said on multiple occasions that they still coach blocking technique the same way despite this rule change.

Yup and that's what has me worried... Being stubborn and doing that could cost us... It might not but nobody can say definitively that it won't either. Be it against Wisky or anyone else...

KF is an offensive line specialist, so I trust him in deciding that there isn't a need to change how they coach it. However, I worry more with a 3-4 defense because the extra linebacker is one more man that's consistently outside the tackle box.
