Blitzing the Linebackers this week

Do you see Norm bringing some early heat with Morris or Kirksey in this game? Outside of the throw to Lenz when Jantz rolled out, UNI forced him into some bad throws when hurried.

I know Jared Clauss noted that Iowa ran some stunt games vs Tennessee Tech, in which Tech did a decent job of picking them up, which makes me think we might be bringing Morris or Kirksey.

With the way Bernstine attacked the line, do we play more nickel and bring the backer or Bernstine, being he has the speed and ability to hit like a linebacker?

I know Norm did this vs Mizzou and it worked on Gabbert and seemed to confuse their o-line.

I can't imagine Iowa doing anything different than they usually do...They haven't for the entire time KF and staff have been here so I can't imagine they will change anything for the clowns.

The weekly "how much will Norm blitz" post....never gets old. And no, Norm will will again blitz very rarely this week.

Ha, exactly!

Statistically speaking, Iowa has one of the best (if not THE best...don't have the year by year numbers in front of me) defense in the nation over the last decade. I for one hope Stormin' Norman doesn't change a single thing.

One of my favorite plays from all of last year was where James Morris came off the slot receiver on a blitz & jacked up Gabbert, forcing an incompletion. Dude went nuclear.

I actually do think you'll see some more aggressive blitzing coming this year. I think it plays to the strength of the team, which appears to be the secondary...

These numbers are probably already floating around out there somewhere, but I was curious so I crunched them anyways - over the past 4 season (2007-2010), Iowa has the FIFTH best scoring defense in the nation. That is frickin' insane. Most of the other teams in the top 10 have had to lie & cheat their way in:

#1 O$U - 13.4 (Known cheaters)

#2 TCU - 13.7 (Play in a mid-major conference...wow, you shut out Colorado St?!? Congratulations!)

#3 Alabama - 15.4 (No hard facts at the moment, but you know they are cheaters)

#4 Boise State - 16.0 (Play in a mid-major conference...wow, you shut out New Mexico St?!? Congratulations!)

#5 IOWA - 16.0 (Legit)

#6 Penn State 17.0 (Legit)

#7 Virginia Tech - 17.3 (Might be legit?)

#8 West Virginia - 17.6 (Might be legit?)

#9 U$C - 17.9 (Best team money can buy!)

#10 Florida - 18.0 (A $30 South Beach hooker called...she wants her moral standards back)

Iowa's problem wasnt getting to the qb on Saturday, they lived in the backfield. Once they get there, they need to make the play.

Kept saying that on Saturday and as I have the game on right now on the last three plays both Alvis and Daniel have failed to get their hands on Lamb after getting in the backfield.

I think with kirksey and Morris' speed and Nielsen is by no means slow, Norm may blitz occasionally to keep the heat on. But those DT's causing havoc back there forces mistakes. (prater INT) But it would be nice to see Alvis and Co. bury Rusty Chance on Sat. !!!!!!

based on what i saw with our DL, we won't need to blitz. we looked really quick off the snap, really fast. we'll need to not be so excited and break down for the tackle instead of running by, but that can be corrected.

based on what i heard and have read, uni was getting pressure with a 3 man rush.

he threw 3/4 ints in the game.

So if we can do what we traditionally do and get pressure with 4 leaving 7 in coverage, i think we'll be just fine.

With our DL stunts we dont need to blitz much, I could see a blitz or 2 under some circumstances, but you wont see all out blitzes from Norm on a regular basis.

Agree with both, if the DL can pressure Jantz as much as they did Lamb and can actually wrap him up, there is no need for blitzing. Even if they dont wrap him up but force him to make errant throws there is no need for a blitz.
