Bigger mess....Rutgers or Illinois?

Both are the dregs of the B1G.

Illinois: Chancellor resigns. Provost resigns. FB coach fired before the season. 2-6 in conf FB play. Currently 1-4/9-9 in basketball….(they launched 37(!) 3’s in a home loss).

Rutgers: FB coached fired. Athletic director fired (amazing in and of itself considering the PC aura suffocating everything these days). 1-7 in conf FB play. Stuck in the east division. 0-6/6-13 in BB….lost by 50(!) at home.

IMO, Rutgers wasn’t a particular good addition to the B1G.

Rutgers. Worst addition to a conference in NCAA history. Solely for $. All they're good for.

Yes great point .... No one cares about $$$$ in this world do they?

A couple of facts. They have an enrollment of 60K+ plus so that is essentially Iowa & ISU combined. They are a huge research & development school with a budget of 750 million. That's about 5.5 x the Texas athletic budget of 140 million (#1 in athletics). They rank 5th in research dollars in the B1G and top 30 nationally. They are a decent academic institution as well.

Their athletics are in debt and lack facilities so they desperately need the infusion of cash the B1G membership brings but new members are phased in (do not get the full share right away). Help in terms of money is on the way for them. As we know they are in a large population area and with future dollars coming to upgrade facilitates and hire good coaches they could dramatically improve in the next 5-10 years.

In football, Rutgers won a bowl game the previous season against UNC while we have now lost 4 straight. I also want to point out that 7 years ago we were getting blown out at Minny by 50 points in bball with Lick. We have been a dumpster fire not to long ago so things can turn around over time.

Rutgers and Maryland were very much strategic adds that fit academically, for R & D and extend the foot print into large population centers. Good moves by the B1G.

I think some people only know how to regurgitate what someone else says or thinks especially if it's a chance to pile on.

I'm not saying Rut doesn't have some upside, but as of the snapshot right now, it's a mess there, athletically.

On the positive side the Big Ten did rather well recruiting in Maryland and New Jersey. Both states were in the top 5 for total Big Ten recruits this year.

These are the top 5 states this year for Big Ten Recruits (First number is the Big Ten total out of the state, second is the Power five conference total)

State - Big Ten - Power 5
Florida 40 out of 189
Ohio State 39 out of 77
Maryland 24 out of 40
New Jersey 22 out of 38
Illinois 22 out of 41

I'm kinda hoping Illinois is the bigger mess.

I think you just got your wish.

New Illini AD Whitman, on his first day on the job, fires Cubit and doesn't apologize for it. And fired Cubit's son along with it.

And to boot, didn't tell the players beforehand. They found out over Twitter.

That's four coaches since 2011.

Wow.

Illini just leapfrogged their way into the lead. First-day firing of Cubit, but the REAL puzzler is that it went hand-in-hand with a vote of confidence for Groce.

From where I sit, Illinois is definitely the bigger mess.
