BIG TEN TONIGHT

Tonight they asked this question. What would you rather have? The best defense in the conference along with the worst overall offense, or One of the most explosive offenses and a average defense? I’d take the explosive offense and average defense. The Big Ten channel agreed with me.

*Brian better bring his best offensive schemes. Even a outstanding defense will get tired if your offense is going three and out.

*The obvious question is how good were the defenses that Maryland played?
*Maryland didn’t really score that many more points against Kent State than we did.
*Maryland has yet to beat a ranked Big Ten team since they joined the conference.

I don't give a shit what your schemes are, if you have one turnstile on the offensive line and mediocre WRs you are extremely limited as to what you can do on offense. One bad tackle or guard and your offense is in park.

Defense wins championships.

I take the defense. If I shut everyone out, Im guaranteed a win.

Any offense can be outscored, see the Big 12.

And looking at this year, our defense shut down 2 really good offenses with 2 of the supposed best QBs in the country and got them pulled early.

No, not anymore. You obviously want a good defense, but Nick has changed the game up completely and you better have an elite offense if you want to win a championship. Nick completely changed the Tide after that game against DeShaun Watson because he concluded that with even the best defense in order to win a championship you are going to have to beat at least one if not multiple top 10 picks at QB in the same season and that you better be able to score 40+ in those games because the coaches go for it anytime it is under 4 yards on the right side of the 50 and it is hard as shit to turn them over. The last 3 champs put up point totals of 44, 42 and 52 in the title game and over 30 in the first round game (LSU had 63 in their first round game against Oklahoma). If you are seeing a QB like Burrow throwing freaking darts no college defense is gonna stop him unless you have a generational talent at defensive tackle like Suh or something crazy like that.

Who is this Nick guy you keep mentioning??? Do you have him on speed dial?

A top 4 team should be able to put up 50+ on recent oklahoma teams as their defenses suck because they tackle with their fingers, not hands, not arms, not shoulders, or bodies, they try to tackle with fingers.

I say you go with a great defense especially up north in Big 10 land. Starts getting harder on offenses those last 4 weeks of the season.

Well tomorrow someone is going to be exposed. For either having an overrated defense or a overrated offense. Iowa State and Indiana didn’t help by going and getting their dumbass beat.

Hopefully it will be neither and Iowa’s offense comes out of hibernation.

For a developing team you start with D. Why after 20 some years are we still a developing team?

Wonder where Iowa ranks on O players in the NFL compared to D?

Evidence shows over the last two years that LSU and Alabama had such overwhelming offenses that Offense wins championships. I'll add, that until and unless IWA has some semblance of offensive competence, they'll not sniff a conference championship.

To me it depends on special teams. If special teams are great, then give me a stonger d to put less pressure on the o If special teams are bad, then your o better be good to help protect the d.

The entire premise of the OP is wrong, so the conclusions aren't helpful. We don't have the worst offense. Our offense has not had to do much, but its done what it needed to do. Minnesota put up 10 against Bowling Green and lost. We are not the worst.

Special teams matter. A lot. We got that. That variable is missing from the OP.

Maryland's defense is not average. Its bad. They are also missing their starting LB and his back up too, and the kid is a stud.

Our Defense may be the best. That is the only part that the OP got right.

I agree the offense will need to have its best game. But, my feeling is that strength on strength (our D and their O) and weakness on weakness (our O and their D) will cancel each other out. We win this game on special teams and better execution/coaching.

Better get ahold of the Big Ten Network and tell them they are wrong. THEY said Iowa’s overall offense ranks fourteenth in the conference. Those stats can be deceiving depending on the quality of defenses that the other conferences teams have played. I was merely repeating what they has said. “Number one defense and worst offense STATISTICALLY. Again, those stats are based on who we have played compared to whomever our conference foes have played.

Let’s not kid ourselves though it’s not like we have even had a top twenty rated offense since forever. If we had that every year then we would be ruling the WEST every year. Defense has simply been outstanding for years. Hopefully Petras is just getting in his grove as is the offensive line.

Agree with you about defense winning championships. But will never refer to Brock Purdy as one of the best QB's in the country.

Shouldn't the question be equal on both sides?

Would you rather have be given 100 dollars and have to give me 90, or given 100 dollars and give me 50.

Frakin idiots.

totally true, even in KF's first two years when they were losing the defense was good and kept getting better. KF is an offensive guy but conservative. Top skill talent does not go to school's that play conservative offense so it is a self-fulfilling prophecy that Iowa's offense will be average.

I just dont know why the hawks got away from the QB under center and the I-back/ball carrier is not as deep at the snap like they were on KF's first 5 50 6 teams. Fred Russell and some of those backs were two yards deeper at the snap which gave them a little more time to cut back and find holes in the zone blocking scheme.

Fred Russell also ran behind some of the best linemen to ever play at Iowa. You put the tailback 2 yards deeper now and all you are doing is going from one yard runs to 0 yard runs.
