Big Ten Pt. Guards

The Minneapolis Star Tribune's Amelia Rayno ranked from 1-12 the starting point guards in the conference. I'm wondering what people think to these rankings:
1. Yogi Farrell, Ind.
2. Tim Frazier, PSU
3. Keith Appling, MSU
4. DeAndre Mathieu, Mn.
5. Aaron Craft, OSU
6. Mike Gessell, Hawks
7. Tracy Abrams, Ill.
8. Traevon Jackson, Wisc.
9. Derrick Walton, Mich.
10. Ronnie Johnson, Pur.
11. Tre Demps, NW
12. Tai Webster, Neb.

It's a pretty good group of lead guards.

Don't buy Matthieu that high. For one thing, he's not the best point guard on his own team. How Andre Hollins got left off of this is beyond me; there's a reason Minnesota tanked without him and while he was still nursing back to full health.

I'd also flip Craft and Gesell, honestly. Gesell is a much better all-round player, IMO. No arguments with the top three, although I think you could just about put them in whatever order you like.

Well it was the Minneapolis paper, so that explains Matthieu being that high.

The tricky part is that some of these guys are not the fulltime pgs. For several games PSU has started frosh Woodward at pg, with Frazier and Newbill on the wings. Minny has started Dre Hollins, Mattheiu and even Malik Smith at pg. This list seems pretty accurate to me.

I think he has Farrell too high … the dude is a turnover machine for a PG. Same with Mathieu. I'd go with ...

1. Keith Appling, MSU
2. Tim Frazier, PSU
3. Yogi Farrell, IU.
4. Aaron Craft, OSU
5. Mike Gessell, Hawks
6. DeAndre Mathieu, MN
7. Tracy Abrams, Ill.
8. Traevon Jackson, Wisc.
9. Derrick Walton, Mich.
10. Ronnie Johnson, Pur.
11. Tre Demps, NW
12. Tai Webster, Neb.

Appling has been very clutch throughout his career (other than the free throws against us). I've seen several games where he hits a three dagger in the opposing team's PG. He separates himself on top by a large margin. My next three would be Frazier, Farrell, and Craft. Mike is slightly behind them. I can't wait to see what MG can do his SR year. He's going to be a special player.

I agree. Gessell has the best assist to turnover ratio in the conference at 3.2 (90 assists and only 28 turnovers) which is critical for a PG. He needs to get his shooting % up a bit, especially at the line. With Appling, Frazier and Craft all graduating he might be the best PG in the B1G next year.

Appling's the best, proven. Homer newspaper puts that Gopher about 5 slots too high. Gesell deserves that 5 slot or so.

I wouldnt rate Craft that high. He disappears on the offensive end, too many times.

It's tough. He is a great defender and a great leader, but you are right at him disappearing at times. But I think his leadership abilities and defensive (hacking when refs are unable to see it) abilities make him higher on that list.

My list which is very opinionated would be:

1: Appling - MSU - No explanation needed
2. Craft - OSU - See above
3. Farrell - Ind - Has improved his game much over last year, but that is because it was necessary. Not sure he can put a team on his shoulders when playing against a top 3 team in the conference. If he can then he will stay here, if he can't then he will drop.
4. Gesell - All around good player, but can be streaky. Earlier in the year his lack of tenacity and ability to hit free throws cost us a couple games. But he is playing now the way we thought he would.
5. Jackson - Wisc - Just a winner. His shot against MSU showed that. I should probably put him higher than Gesell, but I think Gesell has more ability. Also I like Gesell more, so that is why he is here.
6. Frazier - PSU - See Farrell, but he is unproven. Yes he can score. Yes he can pass the rock from time to time. If this was merely an offensive rating, then he would go one or two. But as an all around point guard, I have to put him here.
7. Derrick Walton - Mich - Surprising player. Has all the things you look for in a PG. He is overshadowed by the Real Slim Shady (Stauskas), Lavert and GRIII. But there has been a few times he has put the team on his back down the stretch and shown he has it. He will be a very good PG as he matures.
8. Mathieu - Minn - QUICK. That is what he brings to the team. Sometimes he gets into a position where I wonder how he will get a shot up or a pass around the long arms of a post player but he is quick enough to do it. But as others have said, he isn't even the best PG on his team. Andre Hollins is the catalyst for that team.
9. Tracy Abrams - Ill - Good player, just they haven't figured out how to be consistent. Sometimes that is hard when you have a jacker like Rice and an inconsistent post player like Egwu.
10. Tre Demps - NW - For the style of game NW plays, he is a serviceable PG. But I think Sobel will get his starting job back here soon.
11. Ronnie Johnson - See Mathieu but not as quick. I think he will have to step up even more next year.
12. Tai Webster - Neb - From all the things I read on him before the season he was going to set the world on fire and he just hasn't done it. Could he turn into a great B10 PG, absolutely. Just isn't there yet.

If one of the bottom 4 PG's starts getting some really impressive wins to close out the season I could easily move them up. As you can probably tell, to me a great PG just wins. Doesn't really need accolades, just wants the W's.

Agree with a lot of the people above. Appling is a lock for number 1. Gesell will have something to say about the top of these rankings in a year.

You're all wrong and the Minneapolis article is wrong too...Tre Demps doesn't start, thus he shouldn't be anywhere on the list.

I think they have been starting Cobb at pg since Sobo went out. And Sobo ain't getting his position back..ever. They are much better without him. As far as Ferrell not being able to carry his team vs a top 3 Big Ten team....that is exactly what he did vs Michigan, shutting down Stauskas and scoring 30 pts. Ferrell is my #1 because Appling has missed too many games. Ferrell is shooting very well, and is very hard to contain off the dribble. Lot of good pgs in this league this year. Appling is good, but injured. Abrams has faded a bit, surprisingly, as I saw him as one of the top 4 at the beginning of the season. Walton is coming fast and could be in the top 4 next year. Ronnie Johnson is good, but supporting cast has struggled...mystery team really. Webster has disappeared for some reason. Frosh wall hit. Craft is a winner, and overall game makes him good.
