Big Ten Network coverage of Hawkeye Basketball.

I was excited to have the bigten network when it first started. But now I think I'd rather have the old system back. Several of Iowa's pre-conference games are on BTN.com. My internet connection isn't fast enough to stream the video. I live outside of town so mediacom is also not an option.
Before the BTN, all Iowa's games were on tv, either fox 17 or ESPN family of networks.
I'm gonna miss all of these BTN.com games, have to listen to Gary on WHO I guess.
Just sucks is all.

yeah I don't understand that...why do we have our own network and not broadcast our games. I'm still trying to figure out why the hell we have like 4 11:00 oclock football games and then come 2:30 nothings on the network??? The whole network is based around broadcasting football games and instead of broadcasting 3 they choose to broadcast 1???

I posted this same sentiment in another thread. I would almost rather pay the ESPN Full Court package cost where we could see (almost) all of our games, rather than what we're getting now. At least with Full Court, if the schedule said the game was going to be on, it was ON. And you didn't have to worry about some of the games being on ESPN.com for an extra fee...

BTN TV coverage seems fine in the conference season, but the non-conference coverage is spotty at best. Since the inception of the Big Ten Network, I've seen less Iowa Basketball than I ever did when I was growing up, and that doesn't seem right since it's the BIG TEN Network. Why are not all of the home games televised at least? What can't-miss program is there that needs to be aired instead?

What about the other Big Ten schools? Do their fans have the same issue, or did they not have the TV coverage we did in Iowa back in the 80's and 90's, and are now getting more coverage? Maybe I'm just spoiled. When I was a kid, every single Hawkeye game was televised, except for maybe the odd game in some Hawaiian tournament. I miss that.

Unless I miss my guess, outside of that tournament coming up you are talking about three games on BTN.com, aren't you? Those tourney games have always been problematic, even before the BTN. Outside of those, it is two Louisiana schools and Idaho State, or something like that, that won't be televised, right?

Correct me if I am wrong.

That tournament, which may not be televised, but is all the more reason I'm miffed that the other three games aren't going to be televised. That's even less of our games that will be on the tube this year.

Regarding the BTN.com games, I don't care if it's only Idaho State. I want to watch the Hawks play, not read on message boards about how the games went.

New coach, new players, seemingly new attitude.. I don't want to wait until January until I can watch all the games.

I agree I miss the days when every game against Butthole State and ESWN MIddle Tech was on and it was must see TV early in the season on a Tuesday or Wednesday night.

It's becoming challenging to even see the instate rivalry games on TV.

Typically these are blowout games, which gives us fans an opportunity to see younger players that may not get the chance to play as conference season starts.
I'd like to see some of the new players that may end up not seeing much time, so I can see what lies on the horizon of Hawk basketball.

And a chance to get acquainted with this year's team early in the season. There are always new faces. That, and the fact that I'm not sure how many conference games we'll win this year, either. Those games against Cupcake U may be our best chances to watch the Hawks win, and win by much of a margin. Once the Big Ten starts, it could be a tough road.

As Iowa fans these non-conference games are especially important as we like to see our team win and once conference play starts those wins will be hard to come by.

Before the BTN came along, we were relevant in basketball too. That might make a difference in their programming decisions.

As someone who lives in Chicago, I will gladly give up the games against Louisiana So and So to watch ALL the Big Ten games. BTN is included in my cable service and before I had to pay extra or go to a bar to watch all the Hawkeye bball games.

Go Hawks!

What I am saying is that there would be issues surrounding those tourney games regardless of wether there was a BTN or not. Now, OUTSIDE OF THOSE GAMES, there are three games at issue. You guys all say that all of those games were always covered. But as one poster points out, wwe were better then, so if we were this bad at that point in time, those games might not have been televised.

As far as in-state games go, there is no challenge different than before with that. they are either on our platform, just like before, or they are on that of the opponent.

Nothing appears to be different to me in this regard. I agree that those three games would be good to watch, but it is the same as it has been each year WITH the BTN and I honstly believe it is close to if not the same as it was before the BTN.

I am not saying I like it. I'm just saying.

folks need to separate the truth from what they envisioned something was like previously. The only drawback with the BTN so far has been that not ALL Iowa home non-conference games are available on TV (outside of Mediacom and online). It's a trade I'm willing to make given that I get to see all the other Iowa games (and so many other Big 10 games) for the cost of basic DirecTv service, even when I live outside the Big 10 footprint.

The Paradise Jam TV situation is not the fault of the BTN in any way. The tournament control the TV rights for that event. And the in-state games are controlled by the home team. So when ISU and UNI play at Iowa they are on the BTN, and when Iowa plays at Drake it is on the Drake TV Network (a few stations only in Iowa).

As has been pointed out elsewhere, the cost for overflow channels is significant to the BTN. It is financially worth it to offer it during the football season as there are enough eyeballs watching each game to make it worthwhile. But for non-con games it doesn't make financial sense.

The Paradise Jam will be broadcast on Fox College Sports via webcast for a relatively small fee. I think the Xavier game will be about $10. My brother emailed them to get the info. I agree the non-conf B10 Network coverage is poor at best, but I guess oh well. My biggest complaint is the start times. Our season opener is at 2pm on Sunday afternoon. Who picked that time? We have tons of Sunday games this year, and I don't like it. I'd much rather play anytime on Saturday.

I love the Sunday games, no conflicts with any high school activities. And a 2 pm start time is perfect, I don't have to leave Des Moines at an early hour and still get home at a decent time as well to just relax and enjoy the night before heading back to work the next day.

The NFL is hugely popular in this country and Sundays 2 oclock tipoff conflicts with games like Bears/Vikings...which will keep students and some other fans at home on Sunday. They should have scheduled it for 4 oclock...still early enough for fans to get home, and late enough to catch the early NFL games.

It really ticks me off that the games not carried on the BTN are on Mediascum. I remember when Mediascum did not carry the BTN and the hard feelings. Now the BTN rewards them by letting them carry the games.
