Great article on the Big Ten and it's identity concerning expansion.

The Big Ten and Midwestern Identity - Reason Magazine

"The battle to keep the Big Ten at 10 is lost, but a few rules should guide any expansion. If your students can harvest oysters without leaving the state, you are not a Big Ten school. If they can leave class and be standing in a cornfield within 20 minutes, you are.

Does summer smell like salt water? Out. Is it fragrant with cow manure? In. Mountains and beaches? Let's think about this. Flat vistas that go on longer than the Academy Awards telecast? Now we're talking."

So Missouri, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Iowa State, and. . . who is the 16th school is Midwestern identity is the deciding factor? Cincinnati? Kansas? I don't know. Good read and interesting take. I don't think this is really that important to the people in charge of expansion, but I think it is worth thinking about.

Kansas

Like I said before, it you're taking Nebraska for its football tradition, you can take KU for its basketball.

I'd be perfectly happy taking Kansas instead of Rutgers or Pitt. Nebraska and to a lesser extent Notre Dame I really want in the Big10err12err13errWhatever though.

I have been thinking Kansas is a good fit the whole time. However, Kansas would end up costing the other teams some money, because they would not carry their weight financially.

However, every time I think Kansas would be a good fit, I think 2012 basketball recruiting class and change my mind.

I don't think it's important to them either, which is unfortunate. Because as this author mentions the Big Ten represents more than a conference.
