Big Ten Basketball Preseason Preview: #8 Iowa

This Iowa team has a mix of promising youth and veterans taking on new roles. McCaffery’s team should improve this year, but whether or not they can compete with the top half of the Big Ten is a question with an answer that I am not sure of. They should be fun to watch at times, especially if Marble can step up and the freshmen have an impact. However if things don’t fall in to place Iowa will have a tough time scoring without Gatens and as a result struggle. They also have a very easy non conference record, followed by a murderers row to start conference play. It will be tough to bounce back form a bad conference start for this evolving team. Best case scenario Iowa could be a fringe bubble team, more likely though, they will return to the NIT.

Agree 100%

First of all, when an article doesn't mention White with this year's outlook, the credibility dips in my opinion.

Secondly, while I think Eric May will provide minutes, saying he will play a large role in the backcourt is laughable. I know he's getting healthier, but if we are counting on May to play a large role in the backcourt, I think the ceiling for this season will not be nearly as high as I anticipate it being.

Third, when you call Zach McCabe a sharpshooter, what Iowa team have you been watching? He can shoot the three yes, but sharpshooter! Really!

And finally, the article doesn't mention Ogelsby, who in my mind is just as important Marble, if not more in picking up the slack left by Gatens.

While I think the paragraph Ghost has highlighted has some merit (freshman have to have an impact and how the youth and vets mix will be huge), the key to this club won't be scoring. I have no doubt they'll score. As Caff has said time and time again since the end of last year, the key to this club will be can they defend.

bamahawkeye you nailed it (except I dont agree with your comment about Oglesby). What a joke of an article. Obviously some reporter that got assigned to write an article about the Hawkeyes that can barely spell Iowa.

Jesus, some of you guys take these sports blogs too seriously. Yeah, the guy didn't break down the entire team bit-by-bit, but liek I said, his projection was spot on, and as good as anything I have read from an "expert" here.

You shut it. They have to follow each player for 3 weeks straight and watch film of every game they have played since 7th grade and THEN, and only then, can they write a blog predicting how the Iowa team will do.

This. Next year is the year Iowa basketball will start making serious noise again. This year is all about building on last season. Fran has this ship moving quickly in the right direction, but it's not there yet.

I do hope like hell they make it to the NCAA ,though. I would really like to go to and cover an NCAA game.

Guy has no clue:
"Senior guard Eric May should play a large role and get many minutes in a young back-court."
"Gesell could get some minutes early on and likely develop a larger role as the season moves on."
Despite obvious errors above, like ghost, I think his season prediction is pretty accurate. But even so........
Why do people link to Rantsports.com Worst sports blog evah!!

Agree 100%

The huge grain of salt to take with this analysis by Alan Dale from Rank Sports is that not only does the author seem to imply that May will start ("a large role"), but much worse, there is not one mention of Aaron White, not one word. Dale doesn't even seem to realize that he exists. This is the player that probably got more accolades than anyone returning on the Iowa roster. If you take an analysis of Iowa without White and get #8 in the league, what do you then get with him? I will agree that if Iowa doesn't improve from last year, #8 is expected. However, most fans expect them to improve.

McCabe tied with Marble for 3rd on the team in 3's with 22, behind Oglesby's 45 and Gatens' 75. McCabe was first on the team in percentage at 44.9%, ahead of Gatens at 41% and Oglesby at 37.2%.

Way to cover all your bases...most like make the NIT bit could be a bubble team. Is this guy a weather man in his full time job? And Gatens will be tough to replace really????

Not a bad analysis. I have Iowa at #7 in the league,so I wonder who he has ahead of Iowa...maybe NW?

If Iowa is better,as he indicates, they would probably at least match last years Big Ten record at 8-10.

The ommission of White is glaring,as he is arguably our best returning player.
If he is rating us behind NW or PU...I disagree.

Would really like to know what you are reading to call this article ".....as good as anything I have read from an "expert"". The guy seems to have somehow overlooked a kid named White who arguably is one of our two best players going into this year. One would think when you are attempting to write an overview about a team that just maybe you might want to mention the team's best players? Duh?

I actually thought the writer did a nice job of not making the readers feel like complete morons by stating the obivous in Aaron White.

But alas, woe is my sorrow to see le kool-aid addicts in this thread suckling on the teet of stupidity once again.

You want to be Ghost so bad, don't you?

You realize that the best teams in the NIT were also bubble NCAA teams, right? That's not covering all his bases. That's like saying a yellow lab is also a dog.

If May plays more than 5 minutes a game, we are in deep, deep trouble. He will play ---- but not much.

I think this team finishes 6th or 7th in the Big Ten. If they go 12-1 in the non-conference, we're dancing. If they don't, we won't.

He is like Ghost, only MINUS the humor, and intelligence.

CUN3 is a treasure on this board, and his contributions are as important as anyone here, including myself.

I want to be moar liek him, not the other way around. This place needs moar CUN3's and fewer Basketballman's.
