Bielema strange quote...

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article that covered Bielema's firing of his offensive line coach...

"Bielema, who started his coaching career in 1994 at Iowa as a grad assistant, learned early that delaying staff changes is too costly."

"My first experience in coaching," he said, "there were some guys who really weren't where we needed to be as a staff. And, it hurt everybody overall."

Maybe I am reading too much into this quote. Who knows the context. But, I find it strange and a bit disturbing when I take it at face value.

I think he is just trying to justify his knee jerk overreaction in firing the OL coach after 2 games.

His wife didn't like the offensive line coach.....

End of story.....

Actually the badgers losing to Oregon State took some of the sting out of the ISU game. We will be back. The team is taking a while to get things together with all the new changes. I really thought we would win our first five games, the possibility of winning four out of five still exists for one more week......

I have realized that I am a hopeless optimistic Homer and always will be.....

I don' think there was a big effort by Kirk to retain Chuck Long. I also think the loss of Pat Flaherty was not seen as a step backwards. that said, he could have been talking about Kansas State, too.

I wonder if someone like Chuck Long could help Iowa's quarterbacks and pathetic offensive output?
Just a thought.

i don't think even a dedicated QB coach could help our situation. it really looks like JVB could be a bad fit for the GD system. well, that and we don't have the receivers to do that system either.

is there any chance that we scrap the system for now and try to run something that will run a little smoother if it still looks bad after this week? not that i think someone needs to be fired, but i'm hoping adaptability will be embraced if the O continues to sputter.

I am curious as to how any rational person with a modicum of football knowledge could think this team in particular would go 5-0 when we almost every team we have had after KF got things rolling has had at least one non-con loss. How may times since he went to his first bowl game against Texas Tech have we made it to 5-0? And you thought this team would? We have been beaten by Minnesota the last two years and had better talent in both years than this year.

I guess I just wouldn't have thought we would be 5-0, just based upon looking at past history.

Didnt he first coach under Hayden??

Also, could have been referring to Kirk's staff. There were some changes after the first year.

Flaherty left after one year. He has been successful in NFL so maybe just not best fit for college level under Kirk.

Yes, w/fry fro a long time as player, student, coach. I gave the answer. Brett didn't learn how to value solid line play from alvarez...it was from ferentz/ohara/brashier (fry staff). t. Verducci followed ohara, Austin followed Gill/McCarney. Brett had a front row seat to watch our degeneration....from the perspective of a player and staff member

Adaptability is one thing, but scrapping an entire offensive system and starting over midstream?!?
It will take time. Sooner you start the sooner you arrive. No need to put it off until next year.
