I see that quizzical look so let me explain.
When SA came in he actually did a nice job in his second season. Got us a win in the big dance (IIRC) when every other B1G team lost in the first round. It felt pretty good, like Bowlsby had upgraded from Mr. Davis. Right after that finish Alford's agent asked for and received a very, very lucrative contract. More lucrative than any other coach at Iowa by a wide margin.
Kirk is no dummy. He saw what Bowlsby (and the Univ.) was willing to do at the first sign of success. At that time Kirk I believe had recently signed his contract (or was that contract still unsigned?). In fact if you remember when Kirk was new he coached quite a while with an unsigned 500,000$ contract.
Money and security has always been paramount in Kirk's mind, despite the urban legend to the contrary. And what Alford was able to demand with minimal success informed Kirk what the future could be if he ever got things turned around. Well, he was very hungry back than and indeed got things turned around in year 3 with a bowl victory.
His goal was to be the highest paid at Iowa. He did that and then set about a new goal: to get a contract that guaranteed he would leave on his terms.
And in 2010 he did that. Alford emboldened Kirk while showing him a blueprint. And now Kirk is the official owner of the Athletic Director and the School President. Scandals like nepotism-gate and Section8-gate and rhabdo-gate barely register because he is Iowa's Joe Paterno. He is untouchable. He knows this. Though he may have forgotten the axiom that talks about the consequences of power and absolutism.
