Beano Cook, thorn in side of Iowa football coaches and fans, dies

Cook frequently disrespected Iowa football, particularly teams coached by Hayden Fry. The two men supposedly had a history that went way back to Texas. Cook was one of the prognosticators who picked against the then top-ranked Hawkeyes against No. 2 Michigan on Oct. 19, 1985, in one of the greatest victories ever at Kinnick. Iowa won 12-10 on four field goals by Rob Houghtlin, including the game-winning 29-yarder to end the game.

So because he picked the #2 team in the nation to win against the #1 ranked Hawkeyes he disrespected them? Not following that logic.

The Great Beano also picked Ron Powlus to win 7 Heismans and lead Notre Dame to 6 National Titles in his career.

It wasn't just that game. Beano frequently picked against Iowa and IIRC did not have much love for Fry. Iowa fans loved to skewer Cook in call-in shows.

Ah yes, the unmatched genius of the segment of teh fan base that calls into radio shows to call people out.

How could I have forgotten those lads?

I'll always remember him for his bouncing jowls and for randomly showing up on sports center in the middle of the afternoon.

I enjoyed Beno. I forgot how the moment Iowa was named to play UCLA in the RoseBowl he immediately said. I'm going with UCLA, they're playing at home on grass and they have more speed than Iowa. He was right. Forgot that I disliked him for that for a long time.

He loved PSU and JoPa as well as ND. I think he was a Pitt man though.

He spent a decade or so as Pitt's SID, IIRC.

He also paid homage to Nile Kinnick one season when talking about the Heisman, and he predicted Long would win the Heisman, so he wasn't totally "anti-Iowa".

Never found that slob beano to be insightful, in touch with reality, or entertaining. I never understood why he was on the air.
Ditto lou holltsszh.

i will let you know if beano has passed after the penn state game. there's a dude that sits a couple rows ahead of us in kinnick that i swear is the beano

He was the first football talking head I can recall. One of the first such on TV. Bill Jauss dying yesterday, from the Old Sports REporters on TV show..that was also another guy I loved to watch on a trailblazing program.

Pls tell me you're not favorably comparing beano cook to Bill Jauss??? Bill Jauss was an extremely talented and entertaining journalist, with a unique voice; a true legend in the Chicago sports community.

beano cook was a biased hack, the skip bayless of his generation
