I think you are trying to be overly picky with regards to Alexander since he chose Drake over Iowa. What did he do with the times he penetrated if he didn't kick it out to teammates? He penetrated numerous times, yet only ended up taking 10 shots and didn't dribble it back out. He had a nice dribble drive and kick out to Simons in the first half for a 3.
When they came out from half he had a couple minute stretch his first time in to the game where he tried to do a little too much due to the success he had in the first half, got pulled, came back in and was calmed back down and playing well. He couldn't have been too bad considering only Simons and Rice played more minutes, and Phelps was getting after him while he was running the PG spot for not looking for his shot enough off his penetration and on the perimeter, and he even commended him for doing a great job getting his teammates involved. There may have been one drive that was reckless and he shouldn't have made, but he felt like he could due to his prior successes.
Granted, the 3 point play was just one play as you say, but it was THE play of the game for Drake. Based off last years game, and the struggles Drake has had the last few years, when you play in games like these, and it's a tight game, teams that don't have that one statement play like Alexander's tend to find ways to lose that game instead of winning it. In the grand scheme of things, it's just a traditional 3 point play, but it's plays like those that build confidence for teams and individuals that give them confidence when they feel their backs are against the wall. He's a very talented player that could've helped Iowa in his 2 years of D1 ball. He's a good athlete, can score, defend, and handle the ball..so it seems to be there's more there than effort.
