Based on Drake/ISU game, anyone else glad Kurt Alexander didn't come to Iowa?

Yes he was one of the quickest guys on the floor but the dude made mistake after mistake.

I was at the game and kept commenting on how #3 was killing Drake, throwing up wild shots, not getting his teammates involved, fouling 3 point shooters.....then the announcer said it was Alexander!

Just made me happy he went to Drake as he seemed like more of a liability than a help.

One of the best athletes on the floor that worked his tail off on defense, and played a huge role in Drake coming out victorious...that's what I thought when I watched the game last night with regards to Kurt Alexander.

He played solid defense all night, ran the offense effectively, penetrated well. Most importantly, while Rice was struggling early on, he played very well and kept things going while Madison and Rice were sitting. Phelps said after the game he didn't put Kurt in a good spot with regards to having him play strictly off the ball and thought that may have caused a rough patch at the beginning of the second half. Their best lineup seemed to be small ball with Madison and Alexander sharing the point duties, while Rice played the 3 Simons the 4 and Clarke the 5.

The corner 3 where he was whistled sure didn't look like a foul, and I think the reaction of the ISU player tells you how good he was acting on that play. You may want to rewatch the game with regards to wild shots and not getting his teammates involved. Phelps got after him for not looking for his shot enough. He made probably THE play of the game on his drive and finish for a 3 point play. That was the statement play for Drake.

As far as him being at Drake, things haven't gone as smoothly as they could have with him spending some time in Phelps dog house. However, he is a very good player that had some very respectable programs after him after his outburst against Kirkwood 2 years ago, and I still wish Iowa would've been able to land him.

I'm not 100% sure what game you were watching. Did he penetrate, yes....did he ever pass out of that penetration? No....also, I'm not talking about when he was playing off the ball when their starting PG was in the game. I am saying when he was the main PG on the floor he didn't get anyone involved...as soon as he decided he was going to the basket he put his head down and nothing positive came out of it.

In terms of your 1 play he made at the end of the game...that is like saying you did 1 thing well and 10 things wrong...but just keep doing it!!!!

I agree he worked his butt off...but at some point effort is not enough.

I think you are trying to be overly picky with regards to Alexander since he chose Drake over Iowa. What did he do with the times he penetrated if he didn't kick it out to teammates? He penetrated numerous times, yet only ended up taking 10 shots and didn't dribble it back out. He had a nice dribble drive and kick out to Simons in the first half for a 3.

When they came out from half he had a couple minute stretch his first time in to the game where he tried to do a little too much due to the success he had in the first half, got pulled, came back in and was calmed back down and playing well. He couldn't have been too bad considering only Simons and Rice played more minutes, and Phelps was getting after him while he was running the PG spot for not looking for his shot enough off his penetration and on the perimeter, and he even commended him for doing a great job getting his teammates involved. There may have been one drive that was reckless and he shouldn't have made, but he felt like he could due to his prior successes.

Granted, the 3 point play was just one play as you say, but it was THE play of the game for Drake. Based off last years game, and the struggles Drake has had the last few years, when you play in games like these, and it's a tight game, teams that don't have that one statement play like Alexander's tend to find ways to lose that game instead of winning it. In the grand scheme of things, it's just a traditional 3 point play, but it's plays like those that build confidence for teams and individuals that give them confidence when they feel their backs are against the wall. He's a very talented player that could've helped Iowa in his 2 years of D1 ball. He's a good athlete, can score, defend, and handle the ball..so it seems to be there's more there than effort.

This is just another example of how bad Todd Lickliter was at his job. It is a crime for what he did to Iowa basketball.

what's TL got to do with this?

TL was the coach when we were recruiting Alexander. Honestly, the only player in the Iowa JUCO's that I was interested in was Kaylon Williams at Kirkwood, and even he wasn't a Big Ten-caliber starter at PG.

Well, of the current head coaches at the Big 4, Hoiberg was the only one to not offer KA a scholarship, so bringing TL and his inadequacies into this is a reach. As far as JUCO's that year, Alexander proved time and again to be a better option than KW. The most B1G ready player was neither of those two however, as Will Clyburn from Marshalltown would've pry been the most capable B1G player of the instate JUCO's with his size, skills, and athleticism.
