Basabe

He needs to quit hesitating and just shoot that 15 ft jump shot anytime he is open.

Teams are pushing him off the block, and the defender just stays at the block and lets Mel have that 15 ft jump shoot. They are daring him too shoot. It seems that he hits one and then is still hesitant to shoot.

Mel is a garbage player around the basket and he really needs to start getting really good at hitting that 15 ft jump shot. Mel just does not match up with taller guys or guys who are his size but have lenght like him.

I must say, that was a pretty sweet reverse for the flush by Mel, I think against Nix, but I do agree, he needs to pull the trigger quicker and more often on the mid range jumper.

Agree. If left open, he needs to pull the trigger. Bad things happen when he tries to drive from 12-15 feet and he is a momentum guy who needs some good things to happen early. The same can be said for some other guys who think they have George Gervin moves in the paint. MSU had 16 steals and most came from guys dribbling too deep and getting swarmed. Despite the lopsided loss, Basabe kept battling all night.

Agreed. He can make that shot, and he needs to shoot it more. His percentage will go up if he does so, too.

He really needs to work on his ball handling. What I have seen is a guy tentative to dribble drive. He just kind of gets stuck in no man's land.

He has shown glimpses of being able to hit the 15-17 footer. His game isn't polished but there again he is only a Soph.

Another poster noted, in a different thread how the addition of a good Center would help his game. I agree and believe he could thrive in his Jr and Sr seasons.

1. Fran plays an uptempo game so fast shots should not be an issue.
2. I don't consider a wide open 12-15 foot shot to be a bad shot.

There was one time Mel gave a couple jab steps and then finally shot. Nix was not going to come out to guard Mel since Nix is slow on his feet. It was like Mel wanted Nix to come out but Nix would not. Mel just needs to pull the trigger when you are wide open from 12-15 ft and you are anyone other than Archie, Brommer, and Gabe shoot the ball!

Agreed, Mel should pull the trigger every time without hesitation when he is uncontested anywhere inside the 3pt line.

The added benefit Mel would reap by pulling that trigger more often is his defender would start running out at him allowing Mel to drive around him and get to the rim.

Really 9 year? Why is that? It seems to me the few that he has shot have gone in at a pretty good percentage.

I know I said something like that and others have as well. I truly think Woodbury will do wonders for Basabe. Having a post to work the block will allow Basabe to get his open space.

please god no

His offensive game is most likely going to be maxed out by him being able to hit the 12-15 ft jump shot and scoring on put backs and dunks. I don't know if he will have a great post game, but he can be an effective scorer if he can hit the jump shot as things can open up a bit from there. Also his offensive game should improve if he is paired up with a big man that other teams have to focus on a tad. He can find openings to cut to the rim.

Basabe was not known as a shooter. he has worked it and is getting more confident in shooting the 12-15' shots, he also was successful his freshmen year because he was a unknown quantity. now that he is in his 2nd year teams are more prepared to defend him, with him developing a outside shot to 17-18' it will only help in his jr sr years. not to mention adding a solid Post player will make him that much more dangerous and harder to defend

This all the way. Basabe appears to have developed the same mid-range jumper that Cole unveiled last year. When you're an undersized post player, you need to add elements to your game that make you tougher to defend. A solid mid-range jumper is usually the answer.

McCaffery doesn't want him shooting 15 foot jump shots. He wants him to work hard in the block to get 2 to 5 foot shots. That's what Fran said in his post-game interview after the Ohio St game.

In the midst of getting blitzed on 17-0 runs, I think McCaffrey would be ok with any effort that results in a basket. Our "shooters" keep putting up 4-17 or worse stat lines from 3 and we need to stop these mega runs or the blowouts will continue.

It has been posted multiple times about how having other bigs is going to help Mel, but here is a crazy idea: How about Mel helps Mel.
He has not improved on his ball handling, post moves and his jump shot is still very suspect. Mel was invited to the 19U tryout and if he couldn't see that he had some work to do, then shame on him.
No excuse, the teams in the BIG have prepared for him, but it is up to Mel to not limit himself, but he hasn't gotten much better.
The sad thing is that Gatens is no longer the lightning rod of the Iowa fans, it is now Mel and it isn't totally fair. Iowa has many more problems than any poor game Basabe plays. The same thing as Gatens his whole career.
Yeah, it is easy to criticize, but one that Mel does is try, sometimes he doesn't play with that "high energy" and it may be more of a frustration thing. Look at some earlier games where Basabe had great post position and Iowa's guards just would not pass him the ball. Basabe doesn't have to have a fast start, but he needs to be involved...part of that though is he has to improve in all aspects. This seems to be more of a learning year for him than last because of the leadership of Cole. I expected Mel to have a bigger year, but it doesn't mean he should become the new lightning rod of the fan agnst.
Iowa is a fledgling program, Basabe will be a huge part of the rebirth. He is better than a "sixth man" he just needs to go back to playing they way he did last year, fearless, not methodical. It won't surprise me if White goes through that, but I think he has more overall "basketball" skills and IQ than Basabe, not a knock on Basabe you can just see it in Aaron's play.

The truly sad thing is that ANY Hawkeye player has to be a lightning rod of the fans.

I have to disagree and I'm a bit shocked that people think he should take more mid-range shots. That is way down the list of what is a good shot for us.
