Basabe...

Haven't seen much on this...Was Besabe sick for the OSU game or has he returned to pre-conference form.? Last year he played Sullinger well. Only 14 minutes, no fouls.

Fran said in the post game that Basabe isn't playing with the energy he needs to and until it gets better he won't play as much.
Another thing, which I noticed, is that Basabe was never consistent last year either. He'd have good games and then games where you would wonder if he even played.

I honestly think his good game last year was the fact he came out of nowhere. OSU was a bit more prepared for him this year, as well as the second game last year. I think Basabe needs to get his energy up as well. But I love how Fran is afraid to put him on the bench, even though he was supposed to be so great this year, when he isn't performing

Isn't it obvious? He has gained back the weight that was holding him back earlier in the season. Duh!!

People have to realize that Basabe wasn't a 5* recruit. He was a Siera commit until Coach McCaffery got the Iowa job. He didn't arrive here as a program changer, just a decent basketball player who, like other players on our team, is having some ups and downs in the best league in the country.

And before people get all over him, Fran also said that he knows Mel wants to do well. He said he needs to stay within himself and not try to do too much. He said he's a great player and a great teammate, he's just thinking too much. It's not an effort thing

I think we should start either
A. a thread to discuss what could possibly be causing Basabe's inconsistent play...I know he was a three star but to go from 14-18 pts to 0 pts? huh?

B. A thread "constructing" Basabe and then email our results to Fran.

From Fran himself: "He's (Basabe) an energy guy, who in the last two games, has not played with any energy, and that's why he's played 11 and 14 minutes. If he's not going to play with energy, he's not going to play. Can't make it any simpler than that."

What do you mean he's afraid to bench him?

Maybe he's just gained some of that weight back, afterall that's the reason why hd struggled so much early...

Little late to the party Duff. See above.

In all seriousness, Mel needs to get over this problem he seems to have. If he does not get into the flow early and often, he seems to just shut down.

Aaron White has done the same thing. Where are those posts? It's a tough league. Personally, I think it is all mental with Mel. If he gets a couple of early buckets, he is of to the races. If he doesn't, I think he gets down on himself. Hopefully as he gets older, he will be more consistent. Plus, having a true post player for the next two years, will help him immensely.

I've said it before and I'll say it again... Basabe is way overrated.

He has no post moves, can't shoot, and isn't overly athletic.

Only way this guy could make an impact is on defense and being a hustle guy, which he hasn't been doing because he's "smooth mel".

Ready for Kyle Miller and Woodbury to get here.

Meyer..................wow.

Agree with others that he isn't a true post and without Cole, he has been exposed a bit. With that being said, I am not sure it is fair to evaluate any of the younger guys until we get some better talent around them. Basabe, in a role more suited to his skills, or with another big to deflect defensive attention, will be a more effective player. I just wish he could hit those mid range jumpers like he did against WI when the post game isn't there.
