Barta's comments

“When I was asked, what would be my choices for rivalries, because of geography and tradition I said Wisconsin, Nebraska and Minnesota.,” Barta said. “I feel pretty good that it may not be perfect for every school every year but we’re going to get, based on the versions I’ve seen so far, we’re going to get most of those fit in over time.”

Based on this, Iowa will play 2 of the three every year, the assumption is Wisky will get the same.

If that is the case and Nebby is in the Western division, Minny would have to be in the East. Wisky or Iowa could not play 2 of Nebby, Miny or each other each year, if 3 of the 4 were in the West.

So Wisky and Iowa don't play each other every year, but both schools play Minny and Nebby each year.

Let's just hope Iowa is in the West.

"we’re going to get most of those fit in over time"

Barta's comments started out in the right direction, until he got to this. WTF is that supposed to mean, anyway? What he should be saying is that he demanded that Iowa not get screwed into some nonsensical division and that if we aren't playing our traditional rivals every year it will not be for lack of effort on his part. And furthermore, if Iowa does get hosed, here is the person at the Big Ten to whom Hawkeye Nation should direct their fury.

To be honest...I don't really care about Minnesota anymore...and I could live without Wisky even thought they are usually great games. I would much rather have a guaranteed matchup with Nebby and IllinoiSSS every year anyway.

What I think that means is there will be more expansion.

Good thought

To get two of the three in Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota to agree to go east, they are told it's for two to five years until the league expands to 14 or 16 teams then they will move back west? I could see that.

And Alvarez could more easily get away with that kickback from the fan base than Barta.

Does anyone here know who Wisky sees themselves on par with in the conference? I know Alvarez has said there are six teams who have separated and others have Iowa and Wisky in a second grouping. But, do they really see Iowa as their competition? I mean we see Minny as a rival, but we don't see them as competition. Who does Wisky view as competition?

I really have no idea.

Probably the same teams that we do; as Iowa and Wisconsin are pretty much mirror images.

That's what I've been thinking. I've swung back around to thinking Iowa stays in the West with Neb while Wisc & Minn agree to head east until the expansion is complete. And yes, Alvarez would have a much smoother time with that scenario than GB would.

Shada: I think it is logical for Wisky to think this way, but they are a much larger school in a Pro-Sports state. Milwaukee has one of the best summer music festivals in the nation, and they are a year-round vacation destination state. My peception has been that the state views Iowa a bit like Missouri would view Arkansas. So I go back to asking if anyone really knows who they see themselves as similar, or who they feel they should have reasonable aspirations to be?

The reason I am saying this is that this might be why they are not that broken up about going East.

What does any of that have to do with who Wisconsin (the Badgers) see as their primary competition? If they want to move East, let them. Good luck against Penn State and Ohio State every year.

Fixed it. Summerfest has started to go downhill the last 5 years.

Didnt Barta mention that the divisions would be permanent? I assume that means the division you are assigned to is permanent, and if that is the case, then how does more expansion change the "permanent" part?

State identity does carry over to university identity. But, I still wonder if anyone has any first hand knowledge of how the Wisky people feel?

As far as the divisions being permanent, if the Pod system ever comes to be, that goes by the wayside.
