This decision was made because of economics.

I was actually surprised that he spoke about the financial difficulties that the Iowa BBall team has caused.

He knows he needs to make a hire that puts butts in the seats immediately. That the crowd will appear before the wins.

He is going big, end of story.

I don't know if that means Pearl, although he did mention that he would possibly be speaking to coaches that were involved last time, with the qualifier that out of the group he interviewed, they took their top choice.

I also believe Gary when he says that he waited until now because it wasn't final until now. I believe that was because he wanted to make sure he could hire a tsunami sized coach before firing Lickliter and to test the donor waters on potential names.

He admitted to a short term cash flow issue, and cited the need for better fundraising.

Below is five names... I have no sense of how likely one is versus the other, but I would be comfortable betting a fairly large sum of money, our next head coach is in this list.

Bruce Pearl
Billy Gillespie
Mark Turgeon
Scott Drew
Steve Lavin

Why does Steve Lavin continue to make potential coach listings??

I thought he handled that very well. Simple and short. Lick is a fine man and a good coach. Iowa is not winning enough and attendance is bad. End of explanation. No need to get into sordid details.

The economics is a key part of the justification, that everyone can see just like the losses...those empty seats were ghostly and ghastly...like a specter hanging over the program.

I like your list...if Jamie Dixon and Jay Wright are ruled out.
I even like your order of perference...
Pearl is number one.
after that...look at BillyG closely.
Look at Turgeon.
Drew..check him out.

Lavin? Ok...test his interest.

If it is Billy G....I'd bet we would get Tucker back. He could understand and work with him on his drinking problem.

Hey, what about the General? Bob Knight. Certainly he is a proven winner and recruiter. If you are an athlete and likes winning and being strangled when you need it, then come on and play! LOL

Seriously though, is he done coaching or just waiting to get back in? I would think he would want to take another run at the all time win title. I am hearing mostly Bruce Pearl and keno Davis.

I am operating under the assumption that top tier coaches from the big east are not interested in leaving...

If they were I would put Jay Wright number one on my list, hands down.

-----Careful writing such a well thought out post. You might be made fun of for making sense. It is all about money and the future. Rest assured, this move is still going to hurt the cash flow but if it means getting revenue back up with attendance, then we've got to do it. The alternative is becoming just a FB and wrestling school. We have to have BB too.

He did not do a helluva job at UCLA. People remember that he made several sweet sixteens, but his teams were perennial underachievers. They would be on the bubble every year because they would have a handful of horrible losses. Then, because they had a ton of talent, they were usually able to turn it on and win 2 games in the tourney. But, with the talent he had, they should have been much, much better.

I would assume we can leverage the fact we are trying to expand East and BTN is going to get market share by doing so. A big East or other East coast coach could be swayed as the deal with BTN and expansion of our conference could still provide exposure for them in that market. All while coaching in the highest TV revenue conference.

Would be a major upgrade and I would be very happy if we hired any of these folks you mentioned...

Bruce Pearl
Billy Gillespie
Mark Turgeon
Scott Drew
Steve Lavin

Well winning 2 games in the NCAA in one year would be twice as many as Iowa has had in the last 10.
