Barta Talks B1G realignment

Gary's "opinion" is likely a well-informed one 81

Thanks for the link JDM, I think we all got the feeling from the B1G and the BTN that Mich and OSU were going get put together. Hopefully this also means that we get to play Illinois, and that we get to get rid of the stupid-*** protected rival set-up

Title a little misleading. Makes it sound like those are facts, but they are actually his opinions only, He offered nothing to make them seem like fact.

When AD's talk like this, in the B1G, they usually aren't caught off guard by the questions. This follows the trial balloon approach we have seen in the past.

I don't mind if they keep the protected rivals. I just want Wisconsin and Minnesota in Iowa's division. Those are the games I care about the most in conference.

So that would make:

West: Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, Northwestern, Illinois, Wisconsin

East: Maryland, Rutgers, Penn State, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State

With Purdue and Indiana being split up. My guess is Purdue to the West and Indiana to the East.

Those are bad splits. We would be like the B12 North used to be.

That would leave the west with only one good population center from which to recruit.

We need Michigan or Ohio or Jersey in our division.

A Western pod would be fine, because then you would rotate with the other pods over 3 years.

But with divisions, when you only play 2 teams from the other division, Iowa could go years without playing in a particular state.

Sorry... Legends and Leaders suck. With the emergence of Wisky and adding Nebby we all be fine with the East and West Divisions.

No were else in college football, a national game... errrr a regional game does this exist.

Who cares about history and competitive balance... as long as Iowa beats Nebby, Wisky, Minny and NW the Hawks should be part of the "post-season"

whoops.. forgot about this...

For the Big Ten it's about East v West.

As long as Iowa can be beat Nebby, Wisky, Minny and NW/Illinay every year they belong in the "post season"

C'mon it's a regional game... not a National game until they have a 32 game play-off and inter sectional games in September and November... ie Alabama and Florida come north to Kinnick and Camp Randall and vice a versa.

The west would be more balanced, and the east would be more top heavy.

Sounds like there is a lot going on, and could be very busy for the commish the next few months.

From article:

"Football alignment is just the high-profile piece in a series of important discussions for league officials. They are slated to meet face-to-face in February, and other football topics include future television contracts, the next round of bowl negotiations and whether the league adds a ninth conference game. Officials also will discuss the potential for divisional play in basketball and Olympic sports as well as travel concerns."

Could the next round of tv contracts give us an indication to further expansion?
I also feel the 9th game is the way to go.

That is a dangerous proposition. If the SEC stays where they are and you are going up against a Georgia or Florida team that only beat the other and then teams like Kentucky, MSST, Vandy, Tennessee, and the other weaker teams in the conference. You might get beat out for the playoffs by that weak SEC team, who beat Savannah State while you were losing a close ninth conference game to OSU.

I really think that MSU is going to be in the West.
West: Iowa,MSU,Neb,Wis,Minny,NW,Ill.
East: OSU,Mich,PSU,Md,Rutgers,IU,PU

MSU vs Michigan as crossover game. The only big rivalry missing every year will be Minny vs Michigan, but that is dominated by Michigan anyway...they can still play every 6 years...sorry Minny.
