Barta on Coker

Barta was asked if the door was open for Coker's return: "Yes, the invitation is there for him to come back. We'll let this play out and see what happens."

Juxtapose that with Kirk last week saying on the radio that they would 'live with' Coker's suspension....just reinforces my thought that whatever Coker was suspended for, it wasn't a 'big' deal in the grand scheme of things, especially since the 'invitiation' is there for Coker to return, Johnson County atty says there is no legal investigation with Coker, and Campus police saying no legal investigation.

I hope we find out what happened. It sounds like this might be a nickel and dime bull$$$$ deal?

I actually find that comment a bit troubling.

The only aspect that I see as potentially 'troubling' is if Coker isn't sure he'd want to come back.

If this is something that is not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things (which I think is the case), you sure as heck would have thought someone could have come out and said something to ward off the rampant speculation that has taken place. There were some seriously horrific things some people were posting. It would cause me to pause and evaluate the situation, to be sure.

I don't like the phrase "the invitation is there for him to come back." Sounds like he isn't "on" the team.

I dont think he took part in any bowl prep after the 18th, and basically was out of the mix. I believe the same applied for Adam Robinson last year, up until he got busted on the eve of the bowl game

I agree. The fact that he said "the invitation" at all would imply that Coker is no longer a member of the team.

That makes sense because of the suspension. But i would still think he would be thought of as part of the team. The way Barta phrased that makes it sound like he isn't currently part of the team.

If it's not a big deal, then why is the invitation to return even there??

I hope these guys take their punishment like men, suck it up and come back next season. Wouldn't that be refreshing, compared to the I am taking my ball and leaving mendality? I am tired of these guys getting upset by their punishments and leaving.

Time capsule - October 3, 2002

"Coach Steve Alford said the door is still open for Pierre Pierce to come back to the Hawkeyes."

Invitation for him to come back? What the hell does that mean? I thought he was still a member of the team, just held out of the bowl game. No different than the plethora of guys who don't play against [Direction] [State Name] [Tech/International/State] in the first game of the season for DUI/OWI/domestic violence/petty theft/assault/other offseason transgression in the first game of the season.

JD - No matter how much you try to sugarcoat it, Kurt can't muzzle the players and suppress information leakage and then have these guys give cryptic messages assuring us everything is a-ok when we've come to expect nothing short of the worst the past 23-ish months.

I won't debate that. PR is just not a strong suit in Iowa City

My guess is Coker will be back and there will never be an official explanation re: the suspension.

Coker knows he is going to get a lot of carries again next year. that;s what RBs want.

i believe he is home for the holidays as it semester break
I just hope the rule wasn't some ticky tack thing that cost us a good rb
