Baer Blows Cover On Players-Only Meeting

"Uhl said the offense needs better ball movement to open things up better for everyone on the court,"

YES YES YES YES!!!!

Woodbury is slowly becoming one of my favorite Hawkeyes - has a good sense of humor and through all the fan criticism all he's done is improve, often in ways that aren't easily noticeable.

Then maybe he needs to pass every now and then instead of putting his head down and forcing it every time he gets the ball.

Yeah just what we need, more perimeter passing until the shot clock is toast and Gesell has to launch a 3 from somewhere in Cedar Rapids.

How many times have we seen Woodbury one on one with a shorter guy, directly under the basket, gets the ball and he immediately passes it back out to the 3 point line like it's got Ebola on it. He has that, "oh cr*p, what do I do now" look every time he gets the ball and that's why mediocre players like Donavan Jack can torch him.

We ABSOLUTELY need more perimeter passing ... quicker, inside / out and reversal, as opposed to guard to wing to guard to wing, handoff to other guard "passing". While it's usually excessive stationary dribbling or stupid, over penetration that is Mikey's issues, you're spot-on that he should NOT be launching any 3's. He should be the 5th scoring option in every single possession, regardless of who's on the floor, and should NEVER have the ball in his hands under 5 seconds left in any possession or half.

Not as much as you think, except, maybe at Penn State. In fact, a big reason for the recent struggles on offense is because Woody is not touching the ball as much as he should.

He was money, all day, at Indy. They had several possessions when they could've extended the lead in the 2nd half and the other guys didn't even look at him, wide open & well-positioned, over the top. Instead, another missed jump shot.

Penn State, he was simply out of sync but there's no excuse why he only attempted 2 shots. When a guy's mauling you, you take it at him and try to get his butt to the bench. Hawks kept settling for jump shots and didn't adjust when they simply were not falling. That Uthoff(14) and Jok(15) took 57% of the shots and Gesell(8) had the 3rd highest number of attempts, that's just a stupid game plan / decision-making by the other guys. Even against bad teams like PSU, you can't get that 1-dimensional. Then, when that 1 dimension isn't working, ya pretty much get beat in embarrassing fashion.

I'll give you, Woody has his WTF / laugh-out-loud moments but he's been pretty aggressive going to the hoop, with much stronger intent.

It sounds to me like the guys hit the reset button and got some much needed rest...mental being more important than physical IMO. Pete in particular is playing great offensively. But he needs to do what Uthoff does...get someone else a basket to keep them involved. Then take over when we're struggling and at the end of the game...my opinion of course.

I agree with what you're saying in theory, but they just don't execute that theory on the floor. If AW could make himself the inside threat he should be (I don't care if you miss a couple lay ups, but at least put the ball up when you get it and make them not foul you) it would open everything up. I hear all day long that he's in there to rebound and not score, but that's what's causing us problems. Doubling up on Uthoff and Jok is a lot less risky for other teams when Iowa doesn't have someone in charge in the paint. I mean good lord that kid is out beyond the 3 point line with his back to the ball all the time, but he doesn't draw any defenders away doing that since he's not a short jumper threat.

When the Hawks were playing their best ball was when Jok was driving hard and drawing fouls. That forces even good teams to back off and the Hawks can then be pickier about shooting. Of course the stupid fundamental stuff like free throws and traveling aren't helping, but I don't think they'll get their mojo back until they pick up the tempo and start driving the basket and not burning up the entire shot clock every possession.

I need to stop getting so fired up over a college sport. It's not healthy.

I think most of what we saw the last few games starts with the players rest and energy. All else starts to fall apart if they aren't getting the rest time they need. Don't stay up late and don't eat crappy during your off periods has a real big effect on your performance. I see it all the time with young people I coach and some get it, some will not. It depends on how mature they are really. I think they will bounce back now that they've gotten a chance to let their body catch up to their mind.
