Backup QB - Will it be Weigers?

Before contemplating this topic check out this article on Ryan Boyle:

I went to the West Des Moines practice and I wasn't in the least bit impressed with Wiegers. By all accounts, he had a poor practice that day. Sounds like he looked a little better at the Spring Game, byt still not good enough to make anyone feel real comfortable with the QB depth.

I sincerely believe Ryan Boyle is Iowa's best backup QB and he hasn't even reached campus yet. Before a bunch of you start making the argument "he won't be the backup yet because Ferentz is the head coach" think about it. Drew Tate played early. Stanzi won a battle when he was younger. I think Boyle brings a lot of things to the table that Wiegers certainly doesn't so if CJ goes down and you're going to take a chance on a guy you might as well put in the guy who can make things happen.

By the way, I had no clue Boyle is that strong already. A 390 bench press is nothing to sneeze at and he's only gonna be a freshman. I'm really glad this kid kept his commitment to the Hawks.

I think if any incoming QB will be #2, it'll be DC.

Couple reasons I say this:

1) I played softball with his brothers and chatted with his dad, sadly, I didn't know who he was. So there is familiarity bias.

2) we have sunshine and DC. Sounds like two cool super hero names and is it a secret this program needs a super hero or two?

3) his brothers were two of the fastest most athletic kids I've seen (ok weirdos, they have another brother who works with old buddies of mine that invited them to play, I'm not hanging out with young guy softball teams). They both say DC is the most athletic of all the brothers. One of them plays basketball at Wartburg I believe, so that's no small accomplishment.

4) great hawkeye lineage.

Thanks for the info. Hey I'm not partial. I hope they are both legit so they can push each other. I would give Boyle the edge at this point, and I would guess Cook ends up at TE, but we shall see.

We need a couple guys like them who can make the entire team way better. It will soften the blow of the end of the Ferentz era and help keep the team from falling as far as it looks like it might.

Unless something happens to CJ I don't look for the redshirt to be pulled off of either frosh QB... We are talking about the backup spot here where a redshirt is on the line. Now if Boyle is out playing Weigers come fall camp and CJ gets nicked up then.... It's all ifs and butts at this point but I think if CJ is healthy the other qb reps taken in garbage time be it Iowa is up 4 scores or down 4 scores will be taken by Weigers. They won't burn (and shouldn't) Boyle or Cooks redshirt for that. But if CJ is seriously hurt early on and either frosh can help win more so then Weigers then all bets are off but that's a sure tall task.

Not a chance either of them beat out Weigers, and not because KF doesn't like to play young players. We are talking about 2 kids who had zero offers from other Power 5 schools to play QB. They played pretty weak competition comparatively speaking to many QB's coming out of HS. They have an entire offense to learn, and very, very, very few true FR QB get playing time, even the 4* & 5* kids.

I don't mean to say that neither will be good down the line, because I think they could be. Yet anyone who thinks they will unseat a 4* RS FR QB with a year under his belt, and getting #2 QB snaps in the spring is just fooling themselves.

I am no QB expert but Weigers didnt look like a 4* at the Valley scrimmage (which I hope was an abberation). Weigers definitely looks big and strong and his throwing motion looked "smooth". I didnt see the spring "game" so I hope he was over the center exchange and footwork issues he had at Valley.

I disagree with you in this case. Not so much because I disagree with what you're saying. I guess it's just more circumstantial in my opinion. I agree that very few freshman see playing time. However, I was highly unimpressed with Weigers in WDM. Quite honestly the thought of him possibly playing made me quiver. He couldn't handle the Center/QB exchange, he took what would have been a bunch of sacks in a real game (not all his fault of course), and he threw quite a few questionable balls. It was ugly all around.

I guess the way I'm looking at it is if CJ goes down then you're going to be taking a chance on a guy no matter what. Yes, Weigers is obviously going to have an advantage with his knowledge of the offense, but if he still isn't executing it well then that doesn't really matter. I think Boyle brings a lot more to the table athletically and he should be able to make things happen that Weigers won't be able to do. Plus as a true freshman Boyle is already 6'2 220. That article I linked in the first post says he will already have the QB bench press record at Iowa as soon as he steps on campus (and he beat it by a lot). Physically he is ready to play this level of football. My gut says they might be better off giving Boyle a slimmed down version of the playbook that is catered to his style and let him roll with it. If you're going to be rolling the dice on someone you might as well go with the guy who can make things the most difficult on a defense.

I saw Weigers on a moped the other day. He looked huge and super fast!!!! I expect great things from him holding a clipboard this year!!!!

DC just doesn't seem built enough to take the hits as a B1G QB. Maybe he'll beef up when Doyle gets his meathooks on him, but Boyle is just way ahead of him from a body/frame perspective.

Wow. I have not seen enough of TW to even begin to draw conclusions about his ability. What I do know is (1) he was a 4 star recruit, which means he could have been a 5 if he had committed to OSU. (2) He has a big arm, a smooth throwing motion and he is a pretty physical specimen. (3) He has had a year in the program while other candidates for backup have never practiced with a D1 college football team. I am NOT bashing either of our new QB recruits, but come on guys...

I'm not going out of my way to bash Weigers. That's not my intent. I hope he ends up being a great QB. I hope he proves that he is deserving of backing up CJ. If he gets a chance to play I hope he runs with it.

With that said, I don't care how many stars he had coming out of high school. When I saw him play in person at the WDM practice he didn't look good at all. That wasn't just my perspective. That was the consensus among the people I was sitting with and also from the majority of media reviews of that open practice. It's entirely possible that he just had a bad practice. He is human. That's possible and I understand that. However, if he played that way in a game it would be a disaster. The Greg Davis offense is already a bit of a disaster. The last thing it needs is a QB who struggles to get the ball out from under center.

Boyle will be moving out to tackle. Mark it down.

First of all I totally agree with your overall take here. I'm just nit picking by pointing out that Boyle played at the premier program in the state of Iowa against the best the state has to offer and dominated. He also played in that HS Army all star game deal. I think he held his own pretty well that week against other top flight kids. I think if Boyle develops he can take over for CJ in a couple yrs jumping Weigers who will be the backup in the mean time. They'd be nuts to burn red shirts if they don't have to. And by that I mean if they have to start. You don't burn redshirts to be a backup...

God... it's starting already. Are we really debating whether or not a kid who hasn't stepped foot on the practice field yet gives us a better chance to win than... whoever.

CJ better watch his back.... lol

No one is debating that anyone should start over CJ. The question is who should be the backup. It's a scary proposition to think about that situation right now.

What's sad is that a team like Ohio State has 3 QB's who could start and play very well at probably any school in the country.

Anyone who thinks Ryan Boyle's "frame" is better suited for B1G hits than Drew Clark has either 1) No clue 2) has never seen Drew Cook.

The person (Deanvogs) who said neither of these guys had seen any competition...? Once again, clueless. Regina routinely beat teams a class or 2 above them during Drew's time there. The only team to beat them (in OT 29 - 28 or something like that) in the last 4 years was Solon ... who won either the 2A or 3A state championship. Ryan Boyle was probably the single most dominant player in Iowa H.S. football the last 2 years. Did Deanvogs not witness him tear Xavier a new one in the championship game 2 years ago? That game was over by halftime and it was all Boyle. Ditto this year. They lost a game early to crosstown rival Valley. Beat the crap out of everyone else, (including Waukee who has a bunch of kids moving on to play Devision 1 football next year) (oh - and beat them twice) and it was all Boyle, all the time.

Just an unbelievable comment, Deanvogs.

I've been up close to Drew and it's not knocking him one bit for someone to suggest Boyle is more ready physically then him... Cook is a pretty slender looking kid. He looks more like a basketball player (which he's dang good at too) That doesn't mean he won't be a good qb, however I think with Boyle there he will end up switching to TE and bulking up over time. Boyle is a thick chested broad shouldered man already. If he stays healthy I don't see Cook beating him out but it's pretty darn early and we don't know how either of them can throw the ball under the bright lights yet so we'll see...
