Back to the basics, what fundamentals does this team need?

Play fundamental basketball:

1. players are not checking opponents to block them out and we are missing a lot of rebounds,

2. better defensive position flexing the knees, stay between man and basket

3, Quit reaching on defense and getting out of position, cant steal every ball

4. Less help defense leaving your man wide open to shoot 70% from 3 point land

5. need to feed the inside and get some higher percentage shots

6. drive to the hoop for more layups and kickouts for more open threes, play inside out.

What have you folks seen that needs to be made more basic for this team?

I forgot to add that I have seem innumerable times the last 8-10 games where we could block out and get a rebound that would fall in our laps but instead just go mildly for the board and the other player gets it or makes the ball bounce off a hawk, for what really is like a turnover.

If there are around 10 rebounds we should get and dont that is like 10 turnovers

Ball handling in late game / pressure situations.

How many games in a row, with the result a loss, have we given away multiple opportunities with under 5 to play, by losing the handle.

Great point. I didnt mention ballhandling but you are correct. We have had some games recently with only 7 or 8 turnovers but 2-3 of them occurred very late when we needed a big bucket

I'm seeing hesitant reactions to situations. Mostly offensively and guys that just seem unsure of what to do and aren't reacting quickly enough and that split second of hesitancy is costing the Hawks scoring opportunities as defenses are easily adjusting. How many times have we seen White hesitate to take a 15 foot jump shot. I'm watching White here lately and asking myself WTF is he doing out there. 0-Zilch. There is often no set up with Marble attempting to attack from up top or the wing. You can see it coming a mile away, although he has been scoring in bunches off screens he's creating himself. When Mike is handling the ball trying to initiate the offense, nobody is moving or doing anything to create a play. It really just looks like Y ball out there. We have no inside offensive threat or go to guy and this just clogs up the outside and lanes. Olaseni is the key with getting the team going. If he can be more of a consistent threat inside it would help open up the outside and unclog the lanes. We certainly aren't going to see Woody be effective this year and Uthoff is just too light and gets knocked around like Woody. If there are fundamentals lacking it's got to be from Fran coming up with some fundamental basic plays to get guys knowing what they are suppose to be doing out there.

Good point. I like our motion offense against man to man as long as the refs dont let teams push us around like msu.

But against zone you are right there is a lot of standing around.

Need new set of players and new chemistry, aka next season.

Need guys with some bodies and muscle on them. Recruit and lift hard, guys!

Lets just do the best we can, try and eek out the Dance, lose 1st rd, and move on.

--Actually TRY for loose balls, not just go toward them.

--Go up strong inside, don't worry about fouls/blocks. Blocks will happen on occasion, but I've never seen a foul called off of 3 head/pump fakes.

--It certainly wouldn't hurt to actually GRAB some of the rebounds versus slapping at them.

A lot of good points, it is frustrating watching this really good rebounding team not rebound as well.

It was almost like the the Mich game win at Carver was the perfect nexus of all this team's positive abilities-

tight dee, getting loose balls, rebounding, running, great half court offense that day,

And then it seems the lights went out.

So you're already writing off the season? AWESOME!

How about having fun?? These guys are wound so tight that even a frogs @$$ isn't that tight. They, including FRAN the MAN, needs to come out and have fun... turn them loose! Pressure after every made basket and force the action instead of sitting on our heels.

I makes you wonder are there some locker room issues on this team lately?

Much as I have bitched/moaned about Fran and some of the recent shortcomings, I really feel the whole Indiana situation put us in the tailspin. Travel for game, game called/suspended, uncertainty about whether to stay over or not, then come back to less of a "layoff" than anticipated, and not having any energy for the Wiscy game. Minnesota shooting the lights off was further deflation, and by the time the team got back to Bloomington, energy was totally gone. If Purdue doesn't uber-suck, we lose that one as well.

Really? Must not have watched the Hawks much during Jess Settles' run here from 1991-2000.

I agree with #4. I've seen some defensive possessions that look somewhat like little kids playing baseball, where everyone in the field runs toward the ball without discipline. That's part of the reason I like the idea of the zone, although I recognize the zone has been a serious problem lately.

Not really a fundamental, but if I am Fran, I instruct the team to, en masse, approach officials as a group every time McCabe gets called for a bogus blocking or charging foul while an MSU thug-ster NEVER gets those fouls on him. Have one of them say, "Coach PROBABLY thinks that was a crappy call...and if he does, the four of us agree".
