I think he should at least get consideration. From article:

Maybe Iowa coach Fran McCaffrey should get some consideration for Big Ten coach of the year honors, along with Michigan’s John Beilein, Indiana’s Tom Crean and Michigan State’s Tom Izzo. Many felt the Hawkeyes wouldn’t even be within ear shot of an NCAA bid this season. But Fran had Iowa in the conversation—at least a bit. The Hawkeyes went 5-3 in February to save their season and offer hope for the future. This could be a dangerous team in the Big Ten tourney.

they almost never do it like that, but it would make sense. it usually becomes an award for recruiting, as it goes to the coach with the best players. that said, crean deserves it for the turnaround he's done.

I would say Crean is most likely this year with Fran's award coming next year if he can continue to the rebuilding and move Iowa up to 4 or 5 in the league alongside an NCAA bid. However, if they happen to make a run to the championship game and IU drops their first round game, I could see a definite argument to vote McCaffery.

I think when you look at how much this team has improved through out the year you have to consider Fran as one of the best coaches in the B1G.

I would say Beilein has done a great job this year...When teams are loaded with tremendous talent, should that coach be the coach of the year? Would not Coach K and or the NC coach get coach of the year honors every year? Isn't it a little easier to win the conference title when you have probably the best talent on your team? Or should the award go to the coach who has made the biggest improvements and made a statement?
