The Hold Steady:

Ohio State
Michigan State

I don't see anything happening to these two programs anytime soon.

Going Up:

Michigan
Indiana
Iowa

No doubt that these three school are headed in the right direction.

On Treacherous Ground:

Wisconsin
Purdue
Illinois

These are all proud programs that could be the loser in the three going up schools.

Problems Problems Everywhere

Nebraska
Penn State
Northwestern
Minnesota

Is there any hope at any of these schools?

As much fun as it was to sweep Wisconsin, I disagree they are on "treachorous" ground. They have never finished worse than 4th in the conference since Bo arrived and he has the best conference record of any coach in the history of the Big 10 with at least 10 seasons of coaching. Wisconsin isn't going anywhere as long as he is still the coach.

I find it somewhat troubling that even though we can all agree that right now Iowa basketball appears to be on the rise, we've lost to three of the four programs in your Problems list ...:confused:

Are you talking this season only? Cause Wisky ain't going nowhere, and NW is playing the best basketball in school history and I don't think thats changing either.

Northwestern is a better eam than Iowa is, right now.

But looking at the future, that isn't the case.

As for Nebraska and Penn St - yeah really no excuse.

Look -

All I'm saying is that this is a zero sum game. There will be the same number of conference wins as there are conference losses.

So unless we think that winning the conference is going to get done at 11-7 - as teams like Indiana and Michigan become powers, and Iowa becomes no longer a doormat - they have to supplant teams.

Who goes down as they go up? Someone has to.

This is my only disagreement. No one ever give Wisconsin or Purdue enough credit. Purdue is in basketball Mecca and Painter plays defense. Both Wisconsin and Purdue will be fine IMO. Illinois is interesting, because most people agree firing Weber will actually help Illinois in the long run.

You mean other than my wife?

I think next year, the league will be very good again. There will be 4 bottom feeders in PSU,Neb,Minny and NW,with 8 legit NCAA-worthy teams...and that could be set in stone going forward. Pretty much all the top 8 have good classes coming in the next 2 years.

PSU on the road doesn't look good but they are 11-5 overall @ home and Purdue is one of the Home Conference wins in the BT, i have no idea how good BC is but that was a road win against a BE school, the only bad loss in my mind in Conference play is the home loss to Nebraska.
and lookng at the big picture we are not the same team that opened the season, where upsets happen for a variety of reasons, namely in this case was injuries to key people,
Cartwright had a concussion and had hamstring problems, Marble was recovering from a concusion, Basabe had his own trouble with weight and conditioning, White was just getting his feet wet, Brommer was a knee surgey from who know what could have been.
Archie was giving it all he had but it was simply not enough, with everybody fully healthy and ready to go who knows how the Clemson, UNI and Cambell games would have turned out,
at the beginning of the season just about everybody agreed that a injury to Cartwright would be a major hurdle to get over, but this team has done just that, overcoming two injuries to Cartwright.
White McCabe and Marble have stepped it up, to make this a better team. Basabe looks to be getting it, finally. Gatens has been and continues to be the driving force behind this team

I"m not overly optimistic about Purdue. I have a lot of family that is purdue fans and they are not optimistic about next year now that their 3 top performers are going to be gone next year, and don't seem to have a great class coming in. I think they'll be ok, bu they are definitely not going to be the team they were the last 4 or 5 years.

Good thoughts.

OSU/MSU: Agreed

Michigan is definitely on a roll and things are solid for them. I think they are playing near their peak expectations, however.

Indiana is definitely moving up. Another great recruiting class coming in for Crean.

Iowa is on the way up, though not near as strong a tide as Indiana, IMO. Wanna see how this season shakes out, as I see 17-19 wins for Iowa next season. Loss of Gatens will be bigger than some thought..but program definitely trending up.

I don't think Illinois is on treacherous ground. I think they'll get a good coach and that state just has too much talent to be down for very long.

Purdue is a big shaky right now..no wins over ranked teams this entire season, it's a bit of a hollow record.

I also agree with you that Wisconsin is on shaky soil. They don't have a clear bright future, more of a system future. I think they are overvalued as is based on the past success of the program. Losing their best player, too, who is a PG.

PSU has played perhaps the toughest schedule in the league. I think they will be better next year. Not a good team, but better.

Nebraska is going to have a hard time in the league. Minnesota is definitely on the way down, and the injury they had this year really killed them...Tubby is wearing out his welcome. NW loses their best scorer in school history in Shurna. If it's not this year, it ain't gonna happen.

Hey idiot, they got a kid from Valley coming in who is the best player in Iowa according to the guys in the know in Evanston. Plus they've got Sobolewski and a whole bunch of guys who will be back next year.

While AIRBHG gets a lot of run, I want to make damn sure we shake his brother who has been hating on the basketball team, too, before getting too excited about the Hawks. In basketball, you're often just a felony or two away from going from very good to very bad.
