Another Potential Recruit from West Branch?

He's 5-8/185 right now as a soph. Has pretty good speed, too, in the 4.6 range. Likely a DB at the next level, whatever level that will be probably too early to determine.

He started both ways as a freshman at West Branch, first person to do that since 1955, which is saying something considering the talent that has come through there as one of the best small schools in state of Iowa history.

Also, there is a DT that Iowa, Indiana, Illinois and MN are keeping an eye on, Giese, 6-3/275, as a DT. WB has a very big OL this year, esp for a small school.

Sounds good ... must be something in the water out in West Branch:rolleyes:

Sounds good, but what size school does West Branch go up against? Would this kid be starting at Dowling or Valley, let alone staring? I am not saying one way or another, just asking.

Small schools...as for starting at Valley or Dowling, who knows..how many kids go play D1 from those schools on an annual basis? A couple?

This kid has two years to go...I think you's probably a solid S at the next level, but that level could be Coe, or UNI, or who knows just yet.

That's a hypothetical I can't answer but the Hawks have founds some very good talent at smaller schools. I don't know that much about West Branch but Bo Bower and Marv Cook are alums, I'm sure they would have started at any school in the state. Chad Greenway played 8 on 8 football at a small school in South Dakota. He turned out to be pretty good

Marv was 5 years old than me at WB..when I grew up there, we were in the Eastern Iowa Hawkeye Conference. Mt Vernon, Solon, Mid Prairie, Durant, Wilton, Clear Creek...

CC stunk, as did Wilton (in football). Durant fed Myron Keppy to Iowa, West Branch Marv Cook, Mt Vernon sent a few linemen to Iowa....in addition to Matt Kroul and Scott Pospisil later on...Solon, Jame Morris and Marshall Koehn. Mid Prairie sent Jason Dumont. So yeah, it can happen ;)

I wonder how many West Des Moines Valley has sent through the years? Probably less than you would think.

Applington Parkersburg, we know that story.

Pretty impressive list out of those schools. Keppy's son is now a Hawk also, out of a small school, Riverdale in Port Byron, IL. I graduated from a very large HS in Illinois (950 in my graduating class) with a decent football program but we rarely had any D1 talent. Sometimes I think these smaller towns who live and breathe football are hidden gems for recruiting.

Don't forget the Huffords, Paul and Mike, from Mt. Vernon (their sister Boots was on the women's basketball team). And Tanner Miller played at Mid Prairie. And John Roehlk from Durant. My younger brothers were in high school at Wilton when Marv Cook went through West Branch.

Also, about the Giese kid you mentioned... his dad played at Wilton in HS; don't know if he went on and played anywhere in college, though.

Jacob Giese (the kid at WB) also played at Wilton last year. They moved into the West Branch district this year, adding an all-state caliber lineman (on both sides of the ball) to what was already going to be an impressive group in the trenches. If someone is going to knock off Regina in 1A this year, my money might just be on the Bears.
