Another no hitter

Edwin Jackson of Arizona no hit the Rays on 149 pitches. That's twice so far this year the Rays have been no hit.

7 BB's isn't a no hitter in my opinion.

its not a perfect game, but it definitely is a no hitter. kinda like posting a shutout in football but giving up 500 yards of offense. not clean, but still impressive.

It was 8 walks and there is a reason that a walk is not called a hit. He gave up NO hits. It's a no hitter.

Yeah, and if you gave up 5 runs on walks but didn't allow any hits no one would congratulate you or recognize it as a real no hitter. Sure, it's technically a no hitter, but that doesn't mean anything. Around 5 or 6 is the line for me.

Yes, but if you gave up 5 runs on all walks, you would not finish the game. So you would not throw a no-hitter. A complete game with no hits is a no hitter none the less.

It was obviously an exaggeration not meant to be taken literally used to illustrate a point.

seth is definitely right on about the juice, but i've heard that amphetamines play a huge role too for long road trips and end of season averages.

Absolutely. A lot of guys are definately using amphetamines. I'm sure it's on the decline, but the season is soo long. They should in all seriousness reduce the number of games and increase off days.

Buerhle of the Sox threw his perfect game vs the Rays last July also....weird that a team that is so good, would give up 3 no-nos in such a short period.

I agree that the HGH,Juice,and speeders being weaned out of baseball has probably had a negative effect on the hitters,and positive for the pitchers.
Hitting is down this year,statistically. Some of these monsters were hitting homers with one hand on the bat in recent past...now, not so much.
Now, that said, as the pitchers wear out, later in the season, hitting may pick up.
But, then in the playoffs, when the cooler weather comes in, pitching seems to dominate again.

The White Sox starters have had 15 straight quality starts...6 innings,3 runs or less.
Of course, the same team in 2005 had 5 straight complete games in the ALCS...so,this has been happening over the last 5 years as they wean out the juice-heads.

Juice-less hitters are falling behind their "clean" pitching counterparts.

Actually, to be more accurate, non-juice hitters are simply gravitating back towards the natural equilibrium between hitters and pitchers....good pitching will typically beat good hitting.

Batters = cobra
Pitchers = mongoose

In the end, the mongoose usually wins, unless the Cobra is taking juice. :rolleyes:

Although I agree with the idea that hitters are being weaned off of the juice, pitchers were on the juice too. The juice does not make you hit better (or pitch better) but recover quicker between starts. You might hit farther and pitch faster, but that alone does not result in more no-hitters for pitchers or cycles for hitters (these are up in the recent years as well). I believe there were something like 7 no-hitters in 1990 as well. Is that considered to be in the steroid era?

We also have to remember that hitters of this generation do not just try to hit singles to get on base. Even though the extra help is being weaned out, hitters are still trying to hit HRs when 1Bs will do. A guy like Carlos Pena (.199 BA, 81 Ks with 16 HRs) is an example. There are more hitters like this (and Dave Kingman and Rob Deer and Gorman Thomas :D) now than there was in the past.

The point in other posts about the other 'stuff' (amphetamines, etc.) are also valid. Players from the past have admitted that use as well. I am not sure there is one reason for the fact that there are a lot of no-hitters this year. Sometimes, it just happens. But all of the factors discussed in other posts probably have something to do with it. I just don't think the abuse was all on the hitting side.
