Another good sign!

It's one thing to take down a highly rated team on a night in which the underperformed. Anyone can have a bad night and get stung on occasion.

It's completely a different situation to play well and STILL get beat. Thats' what happened to Wisky last night, and it's a GREAT sign for Iowa. It's not like Wisky handed us anything. That was a straight up heavyweight fight. We took thier best shots, got up and hit them back harder. We won a basketball game last night desipite allowing Wisky to shoot 51% from the floor at 38% from the arc.

It's not like Wisky came out flat, or layed an egg, and we came up and bit them. They gave us everything and still couldn't get a win. That is a very very good sign.

We were good enough offensively to get through a somewhat poor defensive night. I say "somewhat" because there were times that Iowa played very good defense and there were other times when they didn't.

We had very few breakdowns on D last night, and our effort was 100% consistent from tip to buzzer. Wisconsen is a very skilled offensive team in the half court, and it showed.

My point is we don't have to sit around hoping the other team shoots under 40% to get a win anymore.

Here's the way I look at it.....

They shot over 50% for the game. They out-rebounded us. They only had 2 turnovers in the 2nd half. We went the final 7:30 of the game without a field goal. And we still won.

This is the game that we will all look back on and say that we finally turned the corner. Some might say the indiana game was that game, but I don't think so. Indiana came out sluggish and played with little to no heart. Wisconsin, on the other hand, gave us their best shot. This was the game where the players finally learned how to find a way to win when a better team was playing and giving them their best.

another good sign is that i get free trip to emergency room!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!another bout with morphine or whatever.plus sometime nice nurse!

Yep. Watching the game last night, I felt that Iowa really did look like the better team last night, at least for 75% of the game (the other 25% was the last 7-minutes or so where Iowa basically didn't score). Iowa never trailed, and led by double-digits for a large portion of the game. And despite the things you mentioned above. Last night's win didn't look like luck to me.

And....Carver was full and the crowd was loud. It's been awhile. Great atmosphere and a big win for the Proud Iowa Hawkeye Basketball Program. We are relevant again!

I agree, Iowa took Wisconsins best shot and won. They came out lighting up the scoreboard. It was just to much Gatens for them to win.

I agree. They were getting lots of garbage buckets off loose balls. A couple times we had 3 or 4 guys starting the break and the ball took some goofy bounce right to a Wisky player who then found someone for a wide open lay up/shot.

I liked how when the lead got down to 3 midway in the second half after Matt's streak had been broken and he missed a couple more that he still played aggressively and got a big shot in the lane, IIRC; from there we started to slowly rebuild the lead that proved enough to hold on at the end. White had some HUGE defensive rebounds at the end. He was a beast down low.

Some things I did not like:

The junk Wisky was able to get away with: a flop by one of their players in the second half, leading to an Iowa charge (Marble?); the clear arm across (Mel?) as he was going for the one-handed jam; in the waning minutes, White getting body slammed by the Wisconsin player (note the leading elbow and the body leaning into White, not in the direction of the ball, as White went for the ball going out of bounds) at the end of the Wisky bench ... should have been a foul on Wisky and not a Wisky possession; another drive late in the game where the Wisconsin player driving the lane appeared to get stopped by White, leaned into and around him, clearly throwing an elbow into Aaron's side and chest (note Aaron starting to collapse a bit as he headed out of bounds, as you would if hit hard in the chest or side) ... instead of an offensive foul (or at the least a travel, which also occurred), Aaron was called for a foul. That crap apparently is coached (and well) by The Vulture. The officiating that had been fairly good in the first half really missed some critical things in the second.

Also didn't like Fran morphing into Kirk Ferentz to try to ice the lead with about four minutes left to play. Strong offense got you in the position to win, darned it; keep dancin' with the one who brung ya.

Bryce also had a break-away late where he clearly was slowed by his bad wheel and instead of pulling the ball out to try to run time or get the ball to someone else who could shoot attempted to pass it through a crowd to (White?) Instead, was a TO that led to a basket, IIRC (and I may not).

But shortly after that BC made that awesome pass from the back court to White for a slam.

BC was in obvious pain he probably should not have played at all. The effort/mind was there but his body was not.

Our defense was actually great last night. I think we forced 9 TO's in the first half and Wisky doesn't generally turn it over a lot. I agree we got their best and still sent them packing! Love Gatens.

Agree with the OP. Wisconsin shot the ball extremely well, often under extreme duress. The shot put flip from the deep corner by Brust as well as his driving throwup shot in the lane were lucky. The physical play allowed by the refs played to Wisky advantage also.
That charge called on McCabe was bullcrap. It has gotten so that with some refs, the defenders are able to openly bang on offensive players dribbling the ball, but if a defender is touched by an offensive player and flops, immediate foul, even if the defender is side by side with the offensive player. Soon a defender will get beat by a dribbler, but will be allowed to bang into the offensive player from behind and get an offensive foul....I am sick of this crap!

Easily one of the worst charging calls I've ever seen.

+1. I did not forget that. (Well, I sort of did.)

Have to agree with most of your assessment. So apparently now when a player is on a hot streak it is legal to hold push, slap their arm in the act of shooting. I love how MG never says anything to the stripes though, he may give a look now and then, but is pretty calm. I think Gasser might have gotten an elbow to the nose if it were some Rec ball and he were playing D like that. I can agree with a tough brand of B1G basketball, but last night and the beginning of the NW game is just rediculous. Teams like Wiscy hold other teams to poor shooting and low scores couse they foul the s**** out of the other team the entire game, so the league has apparently told the stripes to call games different when playing 'Slow" ball teams. We need to rewind the clock to when the guy on offense had the advantage, and benefit of position, that call on marble was a joke, the guy had no position established was moving sideways into Marble. No one wants to watch/ pay for a game in the 30-40's I hope Fran brings back to the league an exciting style to watch and the Bo's lose favor.
