An observation...not a criticism

I think Gesell has become a very good defender. I like him running the offense and distributing the ball. He's obviously good at getting the ball to the right players in the right places on the floor...assist to turnover ratio. I wish he would shoot less. I don't want him to play less or really change anything...just shoot less. I think this serves Mike better and gets the team going. See made shots and attempts below.

WI 3-12 = L
NW 3-5 = W
OSU 3-7 = W
MN 4-9 = W
MI 2-4 = L

MSU 1-6 = L
IL 2-5 = W

When Mike takes less than 10 shots in a conference game we are 7-3. When he takes 10 shots or more we are 2-7. In the next 2 years we may need him to shoot more. Right now I think he needs to distribute more, run the offense, get teammates going, etc. Again, I'm a Gesell fan and want him on the floor.

The only problem with that is he normally only shoots when he's open and we already have one starter passing up open shots. Unless you're talking about him driving the lane. I'm not sure if I would want him to stop that. A lot of good things can happen when he takes it to the rack. Not to mention that will be a huge part of our offense next year.

I just don't understand what happened to his shot. I don't remember him shooting line drives last year and he was money on the pull up jumper. Hopefully this is like Oglesby last year and he's in a season long slump. I just can't believe a player like Gesell can be that bad of a shooter.

The other thing is Gesell seemed to turn it on towards the end of the year which would explain the record compared to shots took. I think the more aggressive Gesell is the player we will see the rest of his career. Just hopefully without the bad shooting.

Well this season is almost over and next year we're gonna need his scoring.

I like his abuty to drive but he has to improve his jump shot.

So he's not gonna have to shoot less... Just make more. Simple right??

Windsor, i disagree. MG is a liability on defense, a poor shooter (from the lime and the floor), and his a2to ratio is inflated because his turnovers are lower. There is a reason Fram wanted a quality PG in this class.

Mike Gesell isn't as good as we all would like. He's not a particularly good shooter, he's bad at the line, he can't finish, and he's really bad on the break.

He has a nice assist-to-turnover ratio, but that's because he's petrified of taking risks. He also completely shuts down against good, physical guards.

Dude needs to develop a floater in this offseason. He can beat his man but can't finish at the rim. Shoot a soft floater and allow guys like olaseni a shot at a rebound and follow.

MG needs to be a PG first, run the team and be a leader. Second stop driving too far and getting blocked, happens far too often.
Third, if he isn't hitting behind the arc and is wide open...drive the ball and find the open man, shoot a mid-range shot, or get by the recovering defense and try to get an and-1.

He has yet to do any of this in his career. That is an observation as well, but look he has never been a traditional PG in his life, he has learning to do. Last year he looked overwhelmed, this year he is forcing things...no worries he will be fine.

As far as his defense...some days I think he looks viable, others like he has no concept.

Gesell will be fine, he may not be an All-World, but I still think he will be a very good player at Iowa...he isn't bad now.

I'm not so sure Mike is a problem or a liability....there have been many times where our offense if stagnant, no one is moving, players just standing around, so Mike is trying to create on his own, which he does a good job doing, unfortunately, being inactive as we have been at times, we have no rebounders at times......and why don't we have guys moving, and why don't we have guys more involved in the offense? This is the concern I have....guys need to find ways to create and move within the offense....I agree about the "floater"...Mike has to work on a few things and shoot more shots in the off-season....

This is like saying the amount of pepperoni on a double pepperoni pizza is inflated because they put twice as much pepperoni on it.

I never want Gesell to stop driving to the hoop. I have no way of proving this but I would say his FG percentage is pretty good when he drives to the hoop, he draws fouls, and he has plenty of assists out of it

MG will be just fine. He has made giant steps from last year and will do so again for next season. Comments that he is not a good point guard are just the usual trolling nonsense from the same old crew. Piling on is really a popular pass time when the Hawks are playing so poorly.

Kids a gamer and I like that, he is always trying to do what's best for the team....Let's get the damn tourney started already....:)

Bump. MG plays hard, is a good point guard. He looks Really good when a couple others are playing well and making shots. When only Marble is driving and others are either cold or passing up shots, MG is put in a position to struggle, like All point guards.

I don't know if I remember him ever driving and kicking it to an open man. He's basically a streaky shooting combo guard.

I would like to see this more. We get killed by other teams doing this when we collapse the zone(we collapse way too much IMO)

At times Mike has been impressive this year, but I agree that he absolutely needs to shoot the ball better. At times this 3 point shot looks flat to me and needs more of an arc. I also wish Mike was a half step quicker and more explosive off the dribble. So many times he tries to drive to the basket but lacks the speed to get by the defender.

On a related note, Trey Dickerson seems to have the speed and explosiveness that Mike, at times, lacks. I'll be interested to see how the PG position and playing time works itself out next year.
