An example of the immediate impact of a good coach

Tony Bennett at Virgina. That's what often happens when an average coach is replaced by one who really knows what he's doing. Virginia won't remain on top of the ACC, but Bennett has simply made them a better team, right out of the gate.

Tony had/has the experience of building a program at WSU and it shows at UVA, its very much unlike Lickliter( no experience building a program himself ) coming to IOWA, and it shows.

Tony also inherited a team with most of their team returning from the prior year. They also lost at home to the same PSU team that Iowa just beat...

Virginia lost to Penn State at home earlier in the year. :) They also have one win on an opponent's floor this year - NC State. Did you see they have a win against NJ Institute of Technology (I am not kidding). Virginia's strength of schedule is 235 while Iowa's is 48 - according to 2010 Pomeroy Ratings.

I do see your point. 11-4 is a bit better than what we have as a record.

I do not think Lickliter is a bad coach and I think the system is just fine. He simply has not been a good recruiter. The team is slow, under sized, poor ball handlers and very young. A good point guard and someone with size (and skill) would do wonders for this team. The players play hard and are pretty smart, they simply do not match up to the better teams. Does this years signees help? Probably. Bit, a point guard addition is still needed.

This is an interesting assessment and one that has been pointed out repeatedly all year.

Of the factors listed, which are going to change much other than the "young." How does Iowa BB change much?

Good recruiter? Seriously....check your facts. The incoming class next year may be the best in the last 25 yrs.

can't use facts when being negative about iowa athletics. when talking good about iowa, then yes, all facts are valid! :)

one needs to look no farther than Tom Davis as an example to back up the OP's claim.

They may be but I wouldn't hold my breath or bet the farm on it. This is Lick's best class but that isn't saying much. When the dust has settled most of the Big Ten is still going to have better talent.

how can you say that? Just look at KF for an example of this - he never has the top class, but always has a top team in the big 10. when he did have a top class, many/most were busts. THE only way to see through that dust is to wait several years. No way to judge any other way.

Check the facts? Your statement that this is the best class since the Raveling days (last 25 years) is completely subjective. I don't think we'll know how this class stacks up for at least a couple of years. What are the "facts" that we should be checking?

Next year's class is solid for sure, and it could start to change my opinion on this if some of these players are as good as hyped on our message boards, but I don't see how anybody can argue that Lickliter has been a good recruiter based on the players that he's brought to campus so far. Fuller seems to be turning out nicely, but what other Lickliter recruit is having much impact, keeping in mind that Gatens was an Alford recruit?

I think May could be a nice player at some point, but the rest of Lickliter's recruits are either suspended or left the program (Tucker & J. Davis) or don't seem to be producing a whole lot yet.

A couple of years could prove me wrong if some of these guys develop, but Lickliter's recruiting hasn't given me a lot to be excited about so far.

I think KF's recruiting is a little better than many give him credit for. True, we don't get the same number of 4-5 star players that programs like Florida and Texas get, hence the reason our classes aren't real highly rated by alot of recruiting services, but have you noticed that we still seem to send a decent number of players to the NFL? It seems where KF and his staff excel is finding underrated talent and developing them into very good football players. Our football program isn't devoid of talent and good athletes by any stretch of the imagination.

And I never did buy for a second that the 2005 class being a bust means that it is bad to recruit 4-5 star players. I'd take my chances on that any day of the week. But I can't criticize the talent KF is bringing in, as long as the players have what it takes to win the way we have been.

The coach before Lick brought Iowa down from a Tourney team to a NIT/First round loss NCAA team.

Lick took over from there and took Iowa to ground zero.

there is no doubt about that, and that is my point. you can't judge a book by it's cover - you have to read the book.
