An Attempt at a Balanced Opinion

Now that the dust is starting to settle on the WI aftermath, here's an attempt at a balanced opinion.

About the game, sure the last minute didn't go as all Hawkeyes had hoped. Hawkeye Zach McCabe certainly isn't happy about it. But what put us in that position was Basabe's health. He's the leading rebounder on the leading rebounding team in the B1G, WI is last BTW. Yet WI beat us in rebounding (38-33 per Rivals, 35-33 per ESPN). Basabe's absence made a difference, on the boards and on D underneath as Kaminsky continues his hot streak.

Concerning Twittergate, you've got some inappropriate comments to Zach and a response that, although inappropriate, you might expect from a passionate young man. Banning team social media seems like a responsible way to end the pointless and destructive confrontation.

The larger picture is the Jekyll and Hyde response the fans have to winning and losing. Every team disappoints unless you're hoisting an NCAA banner. And we're breaking into another level of NCAA play with good, but not overwhelming talent. So Fran is doing what his 28 years of coaching experience have taught him and going with his seniors to win the close games. Even though they're seniors, this is a new level of competition for them- many of the same teams but with more at stake. So they're not always coming through with the win. I'm still hopeful of a good NCAA run, the first of several, with games like this perhaps putting us in a position to win the next close game.

Zach gives all he has and he is a great representative of the U of I. But what put us in that position was Basabe's health. Injuries and sickness are part of it, MSU didn't complain about it as they handed it to us on our floor. Wisconsin had Brust hurt with his back...at this level you go with what you have. Besides we are 12 guys deep, that should not be an issue. To me our issues were not just centered on rebounding...we gave up way too many points and came out flat as a pancake which led to the worst first half we have played all year.

Banning team social media seems like a responsible way to end the pointless and destructive confrontation. Social media is what it is...Pitino thinks it is EVIL, Calipari thinks it is ok...imagine that.

The larger picture is the Jekyll and Hyde response the fans have to winning and losing. Every team disappoints unless you're hoisting an NCAA banner. And we're breaking into another level of NCAA play with good, but not overwhelming talent. According to folks who make their living covering D1 basketball we have as much talent as anyone in the nation top to bottom. So Fran is doing what his 28 years of coaching experience have taught him and going with his seniors to win the close games. Seriously, and I mean this in a respectful way, if that is what he has learned in 28 years he is in trouble. All good coaches will tell you being a senior is a very, very, very, tiny piece of that puzzle. Even though they're seniors, this is a new level of competition for them Not true...D1 athletes have been playing against top level competition since junior high...AAU has made that possible- many of the same teams but with more at stake. So they're not always coming through with the win. I'm still hopeful of a good NCAA run, the first of several, with games like this perhaps putting us in a position to win the next close game.

Don't start that balanced opinion **** around here buddy

Yea, cause common sense is not acceptable to Hawkeye Nation message boards!!!!!

This whole twitter fiasco needs to go away and quick. Just get back to playing BB tomorrow evening.

Personally, I am tired of watching college BB as a whole because of refs who are either to old to keep up with the speed of the game or the young ones who are egotistical little ****** and make it about them.

There are too many dopes here for this to work!

I will just say that to me, it feels fantastic to appreciate a disappointing loss; instead of having apathy towards way too many non competitive losses. Guys, we are going to be in the NCAA tournament this season. It is all but a given. Yes, the Hawks have played flat a few games; and some were highly visible games, but we have a good team and really good players. But I see that they feel they are, foremost, a team. If the team is okay with Fran's moves and combinations, then the results should be fine for the rest of us. Keep in mind, no one has stated that any player on this team isn't giving everything they have, game in and game out. Therefore, we just accept the outcomes and move on. I am ecstatic to be able to "care" about Hawkeye Basketball, again.
