I took some months off from the football board.
I still dislike KF
I still think this year will be bad
I still think this is his last year.

I breathed in a lot of paint fumes today. I'm now predicting that CJ will play well enough and Kirk will survive the next two years for sure and probably a few after that. Mark it down.

Were you in Ames painting the bleachers black and gold? Don't forget to put a tiger hawk at midfield. That can be our new outdoor practice facility and the AD there will love it, as attendance will double just with Iowa fans watching practice. :)

Honestly, I kind of expect this year to be a little like last. At least one inexplicable loss (ISU like), and a couple of close game we can close out...glimpses of breaking through to the upper level...only to end up in some mediocre bowl game.

Now, if you ask me about 2016...I'm thinking we may be in line to make some noise. Look at the sophs and juniors on this team this year. Sure, losing Blythe will hurt as he will play on Sunday...but the rest of the Oline (minus Walsh) will be hitting their stride. CJ's a senior...good. The three linebackers have another year with Doyle and to get physically ready for B10 play...Jaleel and Faith are seniors and we have promising group of DE's coming up. Sure, Ott's departure will hurt, but the cupboard ain't bare there. The entire secondary could be back, minus #27. That's one hell of a nucleus of players that will be upper classmen with their careers on the line. I like that.

Now, 2015 seems to shape up like a surprise year. The schedule isn't overwhelming (understatement) and you just never know how a team really measures up until they hit the field. I like that Myers and Boetinger are young and hungry and now have some size. They both appear to be extremely athletic at that size. I think the offense will surprise, but the defense still concerns me at LB. Those guys would need to make a huge leap in the running game to make me feel better about a 9-3 season. Honestly, 8-4 is certainly doable with that schedule.

The linebackers don't need another year with Doyle. They need a year with the track coach.

It's not KF's last year, unless he retires. Even if we go 3-9 it's not his last year. Just getting it out there so nobody has to have angst over it this season, brah.

The LBs returning are fast, and played well in space, but struggled in traffic against the run. I would argue, and the coaches seem to suggest, that they need to get stouter at the point of attack and in sifting through traffic.

KF is over due for a good season and with a better QB at the helm and another weak schedule I expect it to happen.

In the event we do go 3-9 then he is toast. New President or no new president. He has been receiving significant heat. Gary can thank Fran for pulling his Azz partly out of the fire. I don't see 3-9 I see sunshine melting away the hawkeye morning dews (dues). :)

somewhere between 3 and 7 wins, with this schedule. Nothing to write home about. KF's future is dependent on how far ticket sales plummet. If average ticket sales fall to around 60K, per game and KF has another mediocre season, I think he'll "retire". I don't think the AD can easily absorb that kind of revenue loss from the football program. I could be wrong, though.

That is a safe analysis. Ultimately, the interior of the OL has experience but has not been great. The Tackle (OT) situation is dumbfounding. Iowa is supposed to be OL-U but cannot start an OT this year that had another power 5 conference offer. Stunning. I hope CJ B is not injury prone. An injury to him and this could be a record setting offensive season (in a bad way) in a hurry. What happened?

Did KF get super depressed after Norm's death? Did he travel a lot? How did it get to the point where he just sort of lost track of the program? He is quickly securing a legacy of a guy that got a ridiculous contract and checked out. Not a great thing to be remembered as.

That's a great question and I wish I knew the answer. After 2010, it looked like KF had unofficially "retired". He had the contract and he hired "safe, yes men" to replace long time assistants that moved on. I've said it all along, safe only gets you so far. If you want to be the best, you have to surround yourself with the best people. Especially when you rely on 6 or 7 other people to coach accordingly. KF has not and will not do that. Probably because he doesn't have to.
